Highlights

The program provides organized training and supervision experience sufficient for the trainee to acquire proficiency as a consultant in rheumatology. The program provides both the facilities and clinical experience with supervision to achieve this goal. Fellows will learn and practice the fundamentals of rheumatology, and also have the opportunity to experience both clinical and translational research in rheumatology.

We host many accomplished and well-respected physicians nationally and internationally in The University of Toledo, especially in Rheumatology. Our faculty and staff are dedicated to meet the educational needs for our fellows in a collegial, academic environment.

Each year, we will accept up to two Rheumatology fellows to join our program. The first year is heavily oriented towards gaining clinical experience in both inpatient and outpatient rheumatology. The second year is more geared toward clinical and investigational research exposure, where each fellow will have protected time to build and conduct research effort, based on the fellow’s interest.

As a trainee in the Rheumatology Fellowship, you have access to a broad and highly specialized training experience that includes comprehensive clinical experience to evaluate and manage the full spectrum of rheumatic diseases, in addition to robust didactic curriculum designed to teach clinical skills, basic science, immunology, radiology and pathophysiology and management of all rheumatic diseases.

Accreditation

The program fulfills the training requirements as defined by the American Board of Internal Medicine and is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).

Application Process

Applications should be submitted through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) ERAS application system. We participate in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) subspecialty match.   The application process for fellowship positions will begin on the ERAS release date in July and applications are reviewed on a rolling basis.  We recommend candidates submit their applications as early as possible to expedite scheduling of interviews.  Applicants are invited for an interview after review of their application.  We welcome applications from BE/BC internal medicine physicians. United States citizens and J1 visa holders are encouraged to apply. At this time, we are not able to sponsor H1-B visas.

Curriculum

The curriculum of rheumatology fellowship includes core curriculum series on weekly basis that includes the following:

1.	Didactic session that will include one of the following: Rheumatology Core curriculum topics (example: RA, SLE, gout, Akylosing spondylitis, vasculitis, etc) Rheumatology Board Questions Hands on polarized microscopy   Joint Injection techniques in the simulation lab	Every week
2.	Clinical case conference once a month	Once a month
3.	Journal Club/Research conference once a month	Once a month
4.	Pathology/immunology laboratory	Every other month
5.	Musculoskeletal Radiology conference	Every other month
6.	Quality improvement conference	Once every 3 months

National Meeting

We encourage our fellows to attend the American College of Rheumatology annual meeting, and we will support their travel to attend the meeting including lodging. One meeting every year will be reimbursed by the program. The fellow can choose different national meeting to attend, we will reimburse up to $1,500 towards expenses for that meeting.
