Dr. Douglas Geiger
2022 College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics Distinguished Alum
Douglas Geiger, M.D., is an orthopedic spine surgeon in Ann Arbor, MI, working in the Trinity Health system - primarily at Chelsea Hospital in Chelsea, MI, - for the past 30 years. He was a partner in the group Michigan Brain and Spine Institute, uniquely comprised of both orthopedic and neurosurgeons, and directed a spine surgery fellowship in conjunction with the University of Toledo College of Medicine for many years.
Dr. Geiger obtained his B.A. ('82), M.S. ('84) and his M.D. ('87) at the University of Toledo. After completing his medical degree, at was then known as the Medical College of Ohio, he completed a residency in orthopedic surgery at The Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit and then a two-year NIH/University of Minnesota fellowship in spine surgery at the Twin Cities Spine Center.
Dr. Geiger’s surgical work has included a wide array of procedures, from major reconstructive deformity correction in children and adults, to currently focusing on minimally invasive and outpatient spinal surgery. He implanted the first artificial disc in a patient in Michigan and currently consults with industry leaders in developing innovative devices. He is a member of the distinguished group the Scoliosis Research Society and also the North American Spine Society.
Dr. Geiger was born and raised in Toledo, OH, and is married to Marilyn Bischoff Geiger, B.S.N. ('81). They have four children, three boys and a girl; their youngest son, Matthew, is currently a 3rd year medical student at UToledo's College of Medicine. Dr. Geiger is devoted to his family and enjoys many activities including cycling, fly fishing, skiing, camping and writing. He has competed in a triathlon and many local running races. He looks forward to spending more time doing all these things and spending time with grandchildren.
Dr. Geiger wrote a short letter to Dr. Song-Tao Liu, department chair, about his visit to campus on September 30, 2022, to attend the Homecoming Alumni Gala, which included the Distinguished Alumni award ceremony, and the Homecoming Parade the next day.
