Title: "Experiencing Totality: The Great Total Eclipse of 2024"

Guest lecturer: Fred Espenak, "Mr. Eclipse"

Tuesday, March 12, 2024

Fred Espenak is a retired NASA Astrophysicist with the Goddard Space Flight Center and the agency's leading expert on eclipses. He was named the 2018-2019 College of Natural Sciences & Mathematics Distinguished Alum, M.S. '76, Physics.

On April 8, 2024, Moon passed in front of the Sun and plunged Toledo into darkness for one to two minutes. The last total solar eclipse visible in Toledo was in 1806 and the next one won't be visible in Toledo until 2099. When viewing the eclipse from a location where the shadow of the Moon completely covers the Sun — the path of totality — you will see a total solar eclipse, one of the most majestic sights on Earth.

Fred Espenak "Mr. Eclipse"

Espenak has written dozens of books on eclipses, generated predictions and maps for over 10,000 solar eclipses, and created three websites devoted to eclipses. He has participated in 34 eclipse expeditions around the world, including Antarctica. His photographs have been published in numerous magazines and appeared on the USPS postage stamp commemorating the 2017 eclipse across the USA.
