The College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics (NSM) at UToledo has partnered with Mentor Collective, the leading provider of high-impact mentoring programs, to offer the UToledo NSM Mentor Collective Program!

In the UToledo NSM Mentor Collective Program, we pair incoming first-year students (mentees) with a relevant upper-division peer mentor. This is someone who has been in your shoes and knows what it's like to be a first-year student in the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics (NSM).

NSM first-year students (mentees) are paired with someone invested in their success — a person ready to listen, inspire, help navigate challenges and recognize opportunities. Mentees will learn what to expect in their first year of college, how to approach challenges and receive general tailored advice. At the same time, mentors will have the opportunity to build their networks and develop skills to become better professionals and leaders.

what do mentors and mentees discuss?

It's really up to you! As a mentee, you should take the initiative to reach out and engage with your mentor - what do you want to discuss? Some common topics include:

  • How will my major impact my career options?
  • How do I balance the demands of classes, personal responsibilities and socializing?
  • How can I set myself up for academic, social and career success?
  • How do I make connections with peers as well as faculty/instructors?
  • How can I find research opportunities as an undergraduate student?

what to expect as a mentor or mentee?

Mentor Collective's online platform provides training and resources for student mentors and makes it easy for mentors and mentees to connect. All matches are made based on common interests, background, academics and career aspirations. Pairings last throughout the academic year.

As a mentee, you'll learn what to expect from UToledo NSM classes, how to connect to student organizations and research opportunities, start to build your network and gain career advice as well as other valuable insights.

As a mentor, you can share your experiences at UToledo NSM as you listen, inspire and help students navigate challenges and recognize opportunities while developing your own professional and leadership skills.
