Important Notice Regarding Text Messaging Data
Effective Date: May 22, 2026

The University of Toledo is committed to protecting the privacy of our students, faculty and staff, alumni and friends. This privacy statement describes the type of information which may be collected when opted-in to receiving text messages. The University of Toledo does not sell or rent opt-in information, including phone numbers and consent records, except as compelled by law. All Text messaging originator opt-in data is kept strictly confidential. This privacy statement is updated as necessary to reflect current collection methods and usage of SMS opt-in information.


  1. Information We Collect

We collect the following types of information:

Personal Information:
The University of Toledo may collect and store personal identifying information, such as name, email address, telephone numbers and opt-in records and timestamps for all communication channels (SMS, email, etc.)

Non-Personal Information:
The University of Toledo may collect and store non-personal information, such as IP address, browser type, device information, website usage patterns, and cookies and similar technologies.

Communication: 
The University of Toledo may collect and store individual communication information, such as appointment details and preferences, service history and feedback, and records of inquiries and service requests.

Where information constitutes education records under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), the University processes and discloses such information in accordance with FERPA and its implementing regulations.


  1. How We Use Your Information

We use collected data for:
The University of Toledo uses collected information to support its educational, student success, and administrative missions, including delivering requested communications, managing university relationships, evaluating communication effectiveness, and improving services. Information is not used for commercial marketing purposes unrelated to the University’s functions.


  1. SMS Messaging & Compliance

Text Message Program Terms & Conditions:
By opting into our SMS messaging services, you agree to receive text messages related to our services, including appointments, enrollment, student accounts, and other University‑related administrative or academic communications from The University of Toledo and its representatives at the phone number entered.

Opt-In & Consent:
You will only receive messages if you have explicitly opted-in to receive non-emergency text messages. The University of Toledo maintains timestamped records of all opt-in actions. The university seeks to comply with applicable law, including the Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA) and the Ohio Public Records Act (R.C. 149.43).

Opt-Out Instructions: 
You may opt-out of SMS notifications at any time by replying “STOP”. You will receive a final confirmation message, and no further messages will be sent unless you re-opt in. All opt-out requests are processed as promptly as practicable.

You can also opt-out of SMS notifications through your student portal on the Update Addresses & Phones page by selecting opt-out on the linked SMS consent form.

Message Frequency & Content:
Message frequency varies based on your interactions with the University of Toledo and its representatives. Messages will be directly related to services requested. The University of Toledo does not send promotional or marketing content via SMS without specific, applicable consent required by law.

Help & Support:
To request assistance, reply “HELP” or contact us at Navigate360@utoledo.edu. Support is available during regular business hours.

Carrier Information:
Standard message and data rates may apply. Carries are not liable for delayed or undelivered messages. Support carriers include AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, Sprint, and most regional carriers.

SMS Data Protection Statement:
The University does not sell or use SMS opt‑in information for third‑party marketing or promotional purposes. SMS opt‑in and consent information may be shared with service providers and contractors solely to support University messaging functions and as otherwise required or permitted by law, including public records requests, litigation, or legal process.

The University of Toledo implements strict data protection measures to safeguard your SMS opt-in information and consent records.

The University of Toledo does not sell, rent, or trade personal information. The university may share information with:

Service Providers:
The University of Toledo may share information with external third-party vendors who assist in our operations and SMS aggregators and providers solely for the purpose of delivering messages you’ve consented to receive. All service providers are contractually obligated to maintain appropriate confidentiality and security measures consistent with applicable law.

Legal Compliance:
Disclosure of SMS messages or related data may be required in response to discovery, public record requests, subpoenas, court orders, other legal requests, or to protect the rights of the university.

The University of Toledo recognizes the importance of maintaining the security of the information it collects and maintains, and we endeavor to protect information from unauthorized access and damage. The university strives to ensure reasonable security measures are in place, including physical, administrative, and technical safeguards to protect your personal information.  The University of Toledo follows the guidelines prescribed in the university’s Information Security Framework policy.

The University of Toledo may use network, server, and browser technologies to collect information, including the following:

  • Cookies
  • Scripts
  • Server Logs
  • Custom URL Parameters
  • Tracking Images
  • Information and correspondence submitted voluntarily via forms, comments, or chats.

The University of Toledo respects privacy decisions of our constituents. You may choose to:

  • Request correction of information, where appropriate and permitted by law Opt-out of SMS messages by replying “STOP”
  • Request information on how we process your data
  • Withdraw consent at any time for future communications
  • Lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority if you believe your rights have been violated.

To exercise these rights, please contact us using the information in Section 10. Certain requests may be limited by the University’s legal obligations under public records, retention, or other applicable laws.

Our website may contain links to third-party websites. We are not responsible for their privacy practices and encourage you to review their policies. This privacy policy applied only to information collected by the University of Toledo.

The University of Toledo may update this policy periodically. The latest version will always be available on our website with the effective date. For significant changes, the university will notify you by email or through a notice on our website.
