Human Resources Business Partner

1. How have you been a support or advocate for professional staff?
Throughout my time at the university, I have been a dedicated advocate for PSA employees. In various HR roles, I have supported onboarding by guiding new hires through their transition to becoming Rockets. My work has focused on training and developing PSA employees and leaders, while providing ongoing support by answering questions related to benefits such as medical, vacation, and sick leave. In my current role, I partner with leaders on change management initiatives and provide compensation analysis for their teams.

2. What has motivated you to advocate and support professional staff at UToledo?
I have also had the privilege of serving three years on the Professional Staff Council and four years on the Professional Development Committee. In my HR roles, I regularly work with employees who bring forward personal and confidential concerns. What motivates me to advocate for PSA is my desire to strive to be someone they can rely on, because I would want someone to do the same for me.

Jamie Lefevre

Student Program Coordinator, Jesup Scott Honors College

1. How have you been a support or advocate for professional staff?
Though arguably simple, I support other professional staff similarly to how I approach my work with students. Making people feel seen and creating connections is what turns a place into a community. It’s often not the large gestures, but the small moments, that can change how someone feels. Things like holding the door open a bit longer, a smile and a wave from a distance, spontaneous offers of coffee, silly valentine cards, and asking follow-up questions from our last run-in.

2. What has motivated you to advocate and support professional staff at UToledo?
In recent years, I’ve realized that, while it’s easy to complain about a place, we shape its culture too. If I’m not contributing positive energy or creating those small moments of joy, how can I expect things to feel better, or improve, for myself and those around me?

1. How have you been a support or advocate for professional staff?
I have consistently supported and advocated for professional staff by recognizing their contributions, ensuring they have the tools and resources needed to excel, and partnering with them to address challenges. I actively engage in initiatives, help behind the scenes, and make sure staff are aware of engagement opportunities and events. I work to break down silos, fostering collaboration across departments so everyone feels included and connected. My approach is hands-on and collaborative, emphasizing visibility, accessibility, and encouragement so that every staff member feels valued and supported.

2. What has motivated you to advocate and support professional staff at UToledo?
My motivation comes from a genuine desire to see professional staff succeed and be acknowledged for the vital work they do at UToledo. I believe that when staff are equipped, recognized, engaged, and included, the entire organization thrives. By fostering an environment of support and collaboration, I hope to empower colleagues to achieve their best and take pride in their contributions.

Jess Sobolewski

Senior Benefit Administration Specialist

1. How have you been a support or advocate for professional staff?
In my role within the Total Rewards team, I have the privilege of serving all UToledo employees, including professional staff. When developing employee wellness programs, it was imperative to seek feedback from professional staff to help get an understanding for desired programs. I have participated in a variety of PSA social events, helping to disseminate Total Rewards programming information. One of my favorite aspects of the social events is getting to put faces to the names of employees I have the opportunity to assist through my role here at UToledo.

2. What has motivated you to advocate and support professional staff at UToledo?
To be able to give back to the university that helped mold me as a student, I am motivated on a daily basis to not only support professional staff, but make sure PSA employees feel they are seen, heard and valued. I try to live by the golden rule, and mirror that in my daily work life.

Patty Watson

My commitment to PSA goes beyond my professional role. I actively contribute to activities that strengthen our workplace community, including organizing a raffle basket for the scholarship fundraiser and assisting with the PSA hot cocoa bar and ice cream social. I also serve on the PSA membership and Sick Leave Bank committees, where I advocate for fairness, compassion, and meaningful support for employees.

What motivates me most is the opportunity to interact with people and be of service. Supporting others, sharing knowledge, and contributing to a positive workplace culture are the most meaningful aspects of my work.
