Scholars Institute Program

Research and Innovation is pleased to announce the UToledo Scholars Institute Program (SIP). Participation in the institute is open to all non-tenured faculty members who are within their first 4 years of hire.

This opportunity is designed to help prepare researchers with preparing successful grant proposals and developing a fundable research program.

Participants will acquire broad perspectives and specific advice for developing an externally funded research program. At the conclusion of the workshop, all participants will have the option to provide a two-page draft proposal summary for peer-review.

Day 1: Pre-Award

Software Systems	How to find funding sources (SPIN etc.) What’s been funded? Internal funding opportunities Utilizing InfoEd
Grant Writing	Necessity and benefits of extramural funding Developing your proposal ideas Necessary characteristics of a fundable research project Review criteria for two page proposal Structure and content of the proposal Strategic writing/common errors What resources do you need to complete your project? Connecting budget to project goals Award life cycle
Visually Compelling Graphics	How to make the graphics that make your research stand out.
Budgets	Starting the proposal process and budget Core Facilities
Compliance	Human & animal research subjects Research compliance regulations - the essentials

Day 2: Post-Award

Topics	Learning Objectives
Post Award	You have received notification that you won the award... now what?
Grants Accounting	Getting people and bills paid Rules and regulations
Business Incubator	Commercialization, startup funding, and more.
Technology Transfer	Helping technology reach the market. Patenting, transferring materials, confidential agreements, and other intellectual property matters.

Other topics may be selected based on the interests of the selected participants.

Preference is given to those who have not previously participated in SIP
