Internal Funding Opportunities

UToledo offers a range of internal funding programs called University Research Funding Opportunities (URFOs). URFOs provide seed funding and resources to help initiate new projects, generate preliminary data, and strengthen competitiveness for external grant applications.

Limited Submission

Limited submission opportunities are funding programs that restrict the number of proposals an institution can submit, requiring an internal selection process to determine UToledo's nominees. Research and Innovation coordinates these opportunities and manages internal competitions to ensure the most competitive proposals are advanced to the sponsor.

Find Funding

UToledo provides access to a variety of external funding resources - including SPINPlus, Grants.gov, and other federal and foundation databases - to help identify and track relevant funding opportunities across disciplines. These tools allow researchers to search funding announcements, receive customized alerts, and access application information to support proposal development.

Post Award

UToledo offers professional development opportunities to help faculty strengthen their grant writing and proposal development skills, including office hours, workshops, and collaborative events like research mixers. 

NSF CAREER Internal Panel Review

The NSF CAREER Internal Panel Review connects faculty with mentors and peer reviewers to strengthen proposal competitiveness. This program provides guided feedback, timeline-based support, and revision assistance to help researchers refine proposals and improve success in external funding competitions.

Research Mixers

Informal social gatherings that bring together faculty, staff and collaborators to connect, share ideas, and explore potential research partnerships. These events often combine brief presentations with open networking to help spark new collaborations and strengthen the UToledo research community.

Scholar Institute Program (SIP)

Designed to help faculty develop fundable research programs by strengthening grant writing skills, identifying external funding opportunities, and navigating the proposal and review process. 

Proposal Preparation and Submission

Outlines the steps and requirements for submitting proposals for internal review and sponsor submission. Resources are provided to help ensure proposals are complete, compliant, and submitted on time.

Lead Time Rules

Lead times refer to the required period for initiating and submitting proposals to ensure adequate internal review, compliance checks, and approval routing. 

• Proposals with subrecipients (subcontracts) or UToledo is the subrecipient: at least fifteen business days prior to submission deadline;
• Proposals without subrecipients: at least ten business days prior to the proposal submission deadline.

UToledo's strategic proposal development services provide tailored support to help faculty develop competitive proposals, including identifying funding opportunities, refining project concepts, and aligning proposals with sponsor priorities. Research and Innovation also offers review and editing assistance to strengthen proposal narratives and ensure compliance with agency requirements.
