If games are canceled, the staff will send notifications regarding any rescheduling; however, please note that reschedules are not always possible.
Staying informed is crucial, as conditions can change rapidly!
Can we reschedule a game?
Rescheduling a game is generally possible, but it depends on the circumstances and availability of fields and officials. To request a reschedule, you should contact the Competitive Sports Office as soon as possible. Keep in mind that not all requests may be granted, and it’s important to follow any specific guidelines outlined in the Intramural Sports handbook. Always check your team’s schedule on IMLeagues for the most accurate information regarding game times and potential changes.
We can't reschedule out a game; what happens?
If you can't reschedule your game, it will typically be considered a default. This means your team will not be penalized with a forfeit loss, but the game will be recorded as a default, resulting in a score of 0-1. Additionally, your team may receive a sportsmanship rating score of 3 for that game. It’s important to communicate with your teammates about attendance and ensure everyone is aware of the schedule.
For more information about defaults, please read the question "What is a default?" in the FAQ. If you have further questions about defaults or specific situations, it’s best to reach out to the Competitive Sports Office for guidance.
What is a default?
A default occurs when a team is unable to field enough players for a scheduled game but not to the extent of being considered a forfeit. In this case, the game will be recorded as a default, resulting in a score of 0-1. The team that defaults will receive a sportsmanship rating score of 3 for that game.
To communicate a default, team captains must email intramurals@utoledo.edu or call 419.530.3700 by 3 PM on the day of the scheduled game to declare a default. Defaults can happen for various reasons, such as scheduling conflicts or unexpected absences. For more detailed information, please refer to the FAQ section or reach out to the Competitive Sports Office.
What is the difference between a forfeit and a default and why do they matter to my team?
The difference between a forfeit and a default lies primarily in the circumstances and consequences for the team:
- Default: This occurs when a team cannot field enough players for a scheduled game but still communicates this to the Intramural Office. To default your game, you can call or email the office by 3 PM on the day of your game. While your team will receive a loss (score of 0-1) and a sportsmanship rating score of 3, you will not be charged a fee for defaulting. Defaults allow teams to manage attendance issues without severe penalties.
- Forfeit: A forfeit happens when a team fails to show up for a game without prior notification to the Intramural Office. In this case, your team will receive a loss, a reduced sportsmanship rating (which can impact playoff eligibility), and each player who does not sign in will incur a $5 forfeit fee. Players charged this fee will be suspended from all Intramural activities until the payment is completed through IMLeagues, which will lift their suspension.
It’s crucial for team captains to communicate with the Intramural Office if they anticipate attendance issues. If individual players attend and check in, they will not be suspended or charged the $5 forfeit fee, regardless of whether the rest of the team is present.
Understanding these differences is important for your team because they can impact your overall standing in the league. Defaults provide a way to avoid severe penalties, while forfeits may lead to stricter consequences and affect team morale.
How are playoff times decided?
Playoff times for Intramural Sports at UToledo are determined based on several factors, including:
- Team Availability: The schedule takes into account the availability of participating teams and their preferred game times.
- Facility Availability: Playoff games must fit within the scheduling constraints of the facilities used for the matches, which can include gym schedules and other bookings.
- Staff Availability: The availability of officials and supervisors is also considered to ensure that all games can be properly managed.
- Sport-Specific Considerations: Different sports may have unique requirements that impact scheduling, such as the number of games in a single day.
- Fairness and Equity: Efforts are made to ensure that playoff times are equitable for all teams, avoiding conflicts with classes or other commitments whenever possible.
Teams will be notified of their playoff times through IMLeagues, so it’s important for captains to check for updates and communicate with their team members accordingly. If you have specific concerns or requests, it’s advisable to reach out to the Competitive Sports Office for assistance.
When are rosters locked?
Rosters typically lock at a specified date and time determined by the Intramural Sports Office, often shortly before the start of playoffs or the conclusion of the regular season. Throughout the regular season of a sport, team captains may add and accept players on their team at any time. However, all players must be on the online roster prior to the game they wish to participate in.
At 12:00 PM on the day playoffs begin, your team’s roster will be “frozen.” This means that anyone planning to participate on your team for any game after that time must be added to your roster in advance. Once a roster is locked, no additional players can be added for the remainder of the season or tournament.
To find the exact date and time for your sport’s roster lock, it’s best to check the specific sport's rules on the UToledo Campus Recreation website or the information provided on IMLeagues. If you have further questions about roster management, feel free to reach out to the Competitive Sports Office.
In what instances can I protest?
You can protest only in specific instances, such as:
- Player Eligibility: Protests based on questions of a player’s eligibility will be accepted.
- Rule Interpretation: Protests concerning the interpretation of rules will be accepted, but only if the misinterpretation affects the outcome of the game.
Please note that protests challenging judgment calls made by Intramural Sports Officials or Supervisors will not be accepted. Additionally, all protests must be made prior to the next play in the game to be considered valid. If you believe you have grounds for a protest, it’s important to act quickly and communicate your concerns immediately.
In what instances can I appeal my sportsmanship rating?
You can appeal your sportsmanship rating in the following instances:
- Discrepancies in Rating: If you believe the rating you received does not accurately reflect your team's conduct during a game, you can appeal.
- Unfair Treatment: If you feel that your team was treated unfairly by officials or supervisors that affected the sportsmanship rating, you may have grounds for an appeal.
- Incorrect Application of Rules: If you believe that the sportsmanship rating was assessed based on a misunderstanding or misapplication of the rules, you can contest it.
To initiate an appeal, you should contact the Competitive Sports Office as soon as possible. Be prepared to provide details and any supporting evidence to strengthen your case. Appeals should be made in a timely manner, ideally within a few days of receiving the rating.
