Placement Testing
UToledo offers placement testing in chemistry, mathematics, and foreign languages to ensure our students begin their academic careers at the appropriate course levels, maximizing their opportunities for success. Your required placement testing aligns with your choice of college/major. Using the options below, please select your assigned academic college/major to review your required placement tests.

Arts, Social Sciences and Education
Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences Majors
No placement testing needed:
Any majors outside of Economics or Psychology
Math Placement
Students should take the math placement test to ensure timely degree completion.
Economics Majors
ALEKS Math Placement Test should be taken if:
- You did NOT complete Algebra I & II in high school
- You have a Math ACT below 22 or Math SAT below 550 (Old SAT below 520)
Psychology Majors
ALEKS Math Placement Test should be taken if:
- You have a Math ACT below 20 or Math SAT below 510 (Old SAT below 480)
Chemistry Placement
Students should take the chemistry placement test to ensure a timely degree completion.
No Chemistry placement test is required for any major (unless you are a Pre-Med/Vet/Dent student and have taken high school chemistry
World Language Placement
All Arts and Letters Majors
World Languages placement is recommended for students who have studied two or more years of the same language in high school and intend to use this language to meet a foreign language requirement. Students in these majors have a foreign language requirement.
To sign up for a world languages placement test, email the UToledo Test Center at testcenter.mc@utoledo.edu. Be sure to email from your Rockets email! Include in your email message: your Rocket # and the foreign language you plan to take.
Education Majors
No placement tests needed for these majors:
- Adolescent Young Adult (grade y-12) with teaching areas of:
- Language Arts or
- Social Studies
- Middle Childhood Education (grade 4-9) with teaching areas of:
- Language Arts or
- Science or
- Social Studies
- Multi-Age Visual Arts (PreK-12)
- Multi-Age Music (PreK-12)
- Special Education (PreK-12)
Math Placement
Students should take the math placement test to ensure timely degree completion.
Adolescent Young Adult (grade 7-12) with Teaching Areas of Mathematics or Science; Middle Childhood Education (grade 4-9) with Teaching Areas of Mathematics
ALEKS Math Placement Test required unless:
- You have college credit for coursework equivalent to MATH 1320 and MATH 1330
- You have college credit for coursework equivalent to MATH 1340 or MATH 1850
- You have been awarded a score of 3 or higher on the AP Calculus AB or AP Calculus BC exam
Chemistry Placement
Students should take the chemistry placement test to ensure a timely degree completion.
Adolescent Young Adult with Teaching Area of Science.
ALEKS Chemistry Placement Test required unless:

- You have college credit for coursework equivalent to CHEM 1090 or CHEM 1230
- You have been awarded a score of 4 or higher on the AP Chemistry Exam
World Languages Placement
Students should take the world languages placement test to ensure a timely degree completion.
Multi-Age (PreK-12) Spanish
Spanish Language Placement Test required unless:

- The student has completed college-level Spanish language courses.
Business and Innovation
Math Placement
The ALEKS Math Placement Test is required unless one of the following applies:
- You have a GPA of 3.0 or higher and an ACT Math score of 16 or higher or an SAT Math score of 430 or higher
- You have an ACT Math score of 20 or higher or an SAT Math score of 520 or higher
- You have earned college credit for a math course through transfer or CCP (College Credit Plus)
Engineering
Math Placement
Students should take the math placement test to ensure timely degree completion.
Engineering Science (Bioengineering, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Science Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Undecided);
ALEKS Math Placement Test required unless:
- You have college credit for coursework equivalent to MATH 1320 and MATH 1330
- You have college credit for coursework equivalent to MATH 1340 or MATH 1850
- You have been awarded a score of 3 or higher on the AP Calculus AB or AP Calculus BC exam
Engineering Technology (Computer Science and Engineering Technology, Construction Engineering Technology, Cybersecurity, Electrical Engineering Technology, Information Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology)
ALEKS Math Placement Test required unless:
- You have college credit for coursework equivalent to MATH 1320 and MATH 1330
- You have college credit for coursework equivalent to MATH 1340 or MATH 1850
- You have been awarded a score of 3 or higher on the AP Calculus AB or AP Calculus BC exam
Your major is Information Technology and your ACT math score is 22 or higher or your SAT math score is 550 or higher.
Chemistry Placement
Students should take the chemistry placement test to ensure a timely degree completion.
Engineering Science (Bioengineering, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Science Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Undecided);
ALEKS Chemistry Placement Test required unless:
- You have college credit for coursework equivalent to CHEM 1090 or CHEM 1230
- You have been awarded a score of 4 or higher on the AP Chemistry exam
- Your major is Computer Science
Engineering Technology (Computer Science and Engineering Technology, Construction Engineering Technology, Cybersecurity, Electrical Engineering Technology, Information Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology)
ALEKS Chemistry Placement Test required unless:
- You have college credit for coursework equivalent to CHEM 1090 or CHEM 1230
- You have been awarded a score of 4 or higher on the AP Chemistry exam
Your major is Construction Engineering Technology, Computer Science and Engineering Technology, Information Technology, and Cyber Security.
Health and Human Services
No Placement Tests Needed
- Recreational Therapy
- Social Work
Testing for Health Science programs:
Math Placement
Students should take the math placement test to ensure timely degree completion.
B.S. in Health Sciences, Public Health, Respiratory Care, Healthcare Administration:
ALEKS Math Placement Test required unless:
- You have college credit for coursework equivalent to MATH 1320 and MATH 1330
- You have college credit for coursework equivalent to MATH 1340 or MATH 1850
- You have been awarded a score of 3 or higher on the AP Calculus AB or AP Calculus BC exam
- Your ACT math score is 20 or higher or your SAT math score is 550 or higher
B.A. in Health Sciences, Speech-Language Pathology:
ALEKS Math Placement Test required unless:
- You have college credit for coursework equivalent to MATH 1180 or MATH 1200 or MATH 2600
You have been awarded a score of 3 or higher on the AP Statistics exam.
Chemistry Placement
Students should take the chemistry placement test to ensure a timely degree completion.
B.S. in Health Sciences, Public Health
ALEKS Chemistry Placement Test required unless:
- You have never taken chemistry
- You have college credit for coursework equivalent to CHEM 1090 or CHEM 1230
- You have been awarded a score of 4 or higher on the AP Chemistry exam
Respiratory Care:
ALEKS Chemistry Placement Test required unless:
- You have never taken chemistry
- You have college credit for coursework equivalent to CHEM 1110 or 1120 or 1230
- You have been awarded a score of 4 or higher on the AP Chemistry exam
Testing for Nursing Majors:
Math Placement
Students should take the math placement test to ensure timely degree completion.
ALEKS Math Placement Test required unless:
- Your ACT MATH score is 20 or higher (510 for the SAT MATH)
- You have college credit for coursework equivalent to MATH 1180 or 1200 or 2600
You have been awarded a score of 3 or higher on the AP Statistics exam.
Chemistry Placement
Students should take the chemistry placement test for CHEM 1120 to ensure a timely degree completion.
ALEKS Chemistry Placement Test required unless:
- You have never taken chemistry
- You have college credit for coursework equivalent to CHEM 1110 or 1120 or 1230
- You have been awarded a score of 4 or higher on the AP Chemistry exam
Medicine and Life Sciences (Radiation Therapy only)
Math Placement
Students should take the math placement test regardless of previous test scores to ensure timely degree completion.
Natural Sciences and Mathematics
Math Placement
Students should take the math placement test to ensure timely degree completion.
Medical Laboratory Science & B.A. Biology Majors:
ALEKS Math Placement Test should be taken if:
- You have a Math ACT below 20 or Math SAT below 510 (old SAT below 480)
- You did not submit SAT or ACT test scores when applying to UToledo.
B.S. Biology, Environmental Sciences, Environmental Studies and Neuroscience Majors:
ALEKS Math Placement Test should be taken if:
- You have a Math ACT below 24 or Math SAT below 580 (old SAT below 560)
- You did not submit SAT or ACT test scores when applying to UToledo.
Astronomy, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Data Science, Mathematics, Physics and Undecided Majors:
ALEKS Math Placement Test should be taken regardless of ACT/SAT scores.
Chemistry Placement
Students should take the chemistry placement test to ensure a timely degree completion.
ALEKS Chemistry Placement Test should be taken if:
- You took high school chemistry
- Your major curriculum requires you to complete CHEM 1230 General Chemistry I
Exceptions to taking the required chemistry placement test:
- You are majoring in Mathematics or Data Science – these majors do NOT require a chemistry placement test to be taken
- You have an AP Chemistry score of 4 or higher. (If you do not have your score yet, you should still take the placement test.)
- You have transfer credit equivalent to CHEM 1090 or CHEM 1230 at UToledo.
You have not completed any high school chemistry course. (NOTE: If you have not completed at least a year of high school chemistry you will enroll in CHEM 1090 Elementary Chemistry before taking CHEM 1230.)
World Languages Placement
For students pursuing a Bachelor of Arts:
If you have one or more years of foreign language experience, take the placement test in that language if you intend to continue study in college. Depending on your program it may be required. The test covers grammatical structures, vocabulary and reading comprehension.
Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences
Math Placement
Students should take the math placement test to ensure timely degree completion.
ALEKS Math Placement Test required unless:
- You have college credit for coursework equivalent to MATH 1850
- You have been awarded a score of 3 or higher on the AP Calculus AB or AP Calculus BC exam
Chemistry Placement
Students should take the chemistry placement test for CHEM 1230 to ensure a timely degree completion.
ALEKS Chemistry Placement Test required unless:
- You have college credit for coursework equivalent to CHEM 1090 or CHEM 1230
- You have been awarded a score of 4 or higher on the AP Chemistry exam
University College
Math Placement
Students should take the math placement test to ensure timely degree completion.
All direct from high school and new first-time students are highly encouraged to take a math placement test.
Students have two options to take the math placement test:
1. The ALEKS placement test - this test is available online:
- The ALEKS test costs $20 (paid directly to ALEKS) for 1 initial test and up to 2 re-tests
- The College Algebra departmental placement test:
- Offered online through Main Campus Testing Services.
- This is available to students at no cost.
- There is no remediation and no re-testing available with the departmental placement test. As such, the math department strongly prefers students to use the ALEKS option for better placement options and higher success rates in math courses.
Chemistry Placement
Students should take the chemistry placement test to ensure a timely degree completion.
Students interested in:
Engineering, Nursing, Pharmacy, Health Sciences, Natural Sciences including Pre-Med/Pre-Dent/Pre-Vet are REQUIRED to take a Chemistry placement test if you completed high school chemistry.
- Students interested in Nursing:
Students interested in pursuing Nursing as their major should take the Chemistry 1110/1120 Placement Test. - Students interested in Engineering, Pharmacy, Health Sciences, or Natural Sciences including Pre-Med/Pre-Dent/Pre-Vet:
Students interested in a major in one of these areas should take the ALEKS 1090/1230 Chemistry Placement test.
There is no fee for the ALEKS Chemistry Placement Test.
World Languages Placement
For students pursuing a major in the College of Arts & Letters, a B.A. program in the College of Natural Sciences & Mathematics or a B.E. in Multi-Age Education
If you have one or more years of world language experience, take the placement test in that language if you intend to continue study in college. Depending on your program it may be required. The test covers grammatical structures, vocabulary and reading comprehension.
