Department of Music

Music Degrees

The University of Toledo Department of Music provides a comprehensive education in classical and jazz music traditions and offers a variety of musical opportunities and experiences for the University, the greater Toledo area, and the global community. We offer music and music education degrees at the undergraduate and graduate levels, including a licensure option. A wide range of minor degree options are available for those who wish to add an area of music as an important component of another degree.

An audition is required for acceptance into any Department of Music degree program. But don't worry! The audition process helps us place you on the right path for success. It helps determine ensemble placement, allows you to opt of required courses when your skill level has surpassed them, and may make you eligible for certain scholarships. Visit our auditions information page for more information.

Whether you are a high school senior or considering a transfer to UT from another institution, the Department of Music offers many degree choices and career options. We also encourage you to consider getting involved in any one of a number of music student organizations. Below is more information on preparing for a degree in music and studying here at UT.

PREPARATION FOR COLLEGE MUSIC STUDY

A student considering a career in music should reach that decision as early as possible and prepare systematically for college. Private study in a performance medium together with serious, dedicated practice should begin no later than high school and sooner if possible. Participation in high school performing organizations as well as solo and ensemble experience is important to the aspiring student's musical growth.

While keyboard facility is not required for acceptance as a music major or minor, it can be a help in some music courses. All colleges expect some study in piano and students would do well to have a little preparation early in their career.

In general, a prospective music student should have a good academic record in high school work and demonstrate a potential skill and artistry in some area of performance.

MUSIC OPPORTUNITIES IN TOLEDO

Metropolitan Toledo is one of Ohio's active cultural centers, providing students with a variety of musical offerings. On the campus, more than 100 concerts are offered yearly by faculty artists, students, and guest artists. The Toledo Symphony Orchestra and The Toledo Choral Society, Toledo Opera Association and Toledo Museum of Art Peristyle and the TSO Chamber Music series offer many concerts each year featuring outstanding artists from around the world. Many of our faculty and students perform regularly as members of these and other groups.

STUDENT MUSIC ORGANIZATIONS

One of the best ways to make sure you have a great college experience is to join an organization of people who share your love of music! Check out the web sites of these organizations or contact them directly to learn more. These groups also regularly post information in the UT Center for Performing Arts student lounge.
