Doctoral Program Requirements

Course Requirements:  The following are the basic required courses for the Experimental Psychology Doctoral Program. Courses with 6000 numbers are Master's level courses and those with 7000 or 8000 numbers are Doctoral level courses; students enroll in 7/8000 level classes after the Master’s Degree is conferred. 

A. Core Coursework (Clinical and Experimental Doctoral Students; 44 credit minimum) 

1. Statistics and Research Design: (12 credits)  
PSY 6100 Quantitative Methods in Psychology I – 3 credit hours  
PSY 6110 Quantitative Methods in Psychology II – 3 credit hours  
PSY 6130 Design & Evaluation of Psychology Research – 3 credit hours  
One advanced statistics elective (e.g., PSY 6/7150 Psychometrics and Scale Development; PSY 6/7930 Structural Equation Modeling; RESM 6130-6230, 6340-6360) – 3 credit hours 

2. Core Content Courses (at least 4 of the following 5 courses = 12 credits) 
PSY 6/7200 Systems of Personality– 3 credit hours 
PSY 6/7400 Cognitive Psychology– 3 credit hours 
PSY 6/7500 Developmental Psychology – 3 credit hours 
PSY 6/7600 Behavioral Neuroscience – 3 credit hours 
PSY 6/7700 Social Psychology – 3 credit hours

3. Research: (20 hrs minimum)  
PSY 6960 Master's Thesis – 6 credit hours  
PSY 8960 PhD Dissertation – 14 credit hours 

B. Experimental Psychology Area of Concentration (48 credits minimum) 

1. Specialty seminars: (9 credits in area of specialization, approved by the advisor)a  
PSY 6/7410 Seminar in Cognitive Psychology – 3 credit hours  
PSY 6/75100 Seminar in Developmental Psychology – 3 credit hours  
PSY 6/7610 Seminar in Psychobiology and Learning – 3 credit hours 

PSY 6/7710 Seminar in Social Psychology – 3 credit hours 

2. Teaching Practicum: (3 hrs)  
PSY 7040 Teaching Practicum – 3 credit hours

3. Research Practica: (30 hrs)  
PSY 6/7030 Research Practicum – variable credit hours  

4. Electives: (6 hrs)  
To be chosen in consultation with and approval of the advisor:  

a. Seminar courses chosen outside of specialization must be approved by the advisor and experimental coordinator.

TOTAL MINIMUM REQUIRED HOURS (Semester hours) = 92 

Note: Students entering with their Master's Degree can have up to 9 credit hours of coursework transferred in. Students in this situation should speak with their advisor and the experimental coordinator.

Other requirements
Qualifying Exam passed by committee
Doctoral Dissertation passed by dissertation committee.
Minimum GPA 3.0 (no grads of C+ or below acceptable)
Final defense
