Prior to his retirement, Jim was with The University of Toledo Department of Theatre and Film for 30 years. He is a scenic design member of United Scenic Artists Local 829 in New York, a union for professional designers in the performing arts.

Besides having designed numerous productions for UT, he also designs for the Toledo Repertoire Theatre, Toledo Ballet and other companies in the region. He is also founding member of the Glacity Theatre Collective, for which he also designs.

He received an MFA in theatre design from The University of Arizona, and an MA and BA in theatre from Adams State College.
