2017-2018 Theatre and Film Season
During the 2017-2018 Season the University of Toledo Department of Theatre and Film included 3 live theatre productions, guest artist visits, and the annual Student Filmmakers Showcase. This year, the department also brought back its annual Fridays on Film Series, a series of 16mm feature films.

September 8, 2017. 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY (1968) - directed by Stanley Kubrick
Humanity finds a mysterious, obviously artificial object buried beneath the Lunar
surface and, with the intelligent computer H.A.L. 9000, sets off on a quest.

October 27, 2017. THE BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN (1935)- Directed by James Whale
Mary Shelley reveals the main characters of her novel survived: Dr. Frankenstein,
goaded by an even madder scientist, builds his monster a mate.

November 17, 2017. THE SUGARLAND EXPRESS (1974)- Directed by Stephen Spielberg
A woman attempts to reunite her family by helping her husband escape prison and together
kidnapping their son. But things don't go as planned when they are forced to take

December 1, 2017. THE CABINET OF DR. CALIGARI (1920) - Directed by Robert Weine
Hypnotist Dr. Caligari uses a somnambulist, Cesare, to commit murders. Silent film
with LIVE music accompaniment! NOTE: this screening will be in the CPA Center Theatre

January 26, 2018. FLOATING WEEDS (1959)- Directed by Yasujirô Ozu
The head of a Japanese theatre troupe returns to the town where he left a son who
thinks he is his uncle. He tries to make up for the lost time, but his mistress grows

March 23, 2018. VARIETY LIGHTS (1951) - Directed by Federico Fellini
A beautiful but ambitious young woman joins a tawdry music hall troupe and quickly
becomes its feature attraction in Federico Fellini's stunning debut film (directed
in collaboration with neorealist filmmaker Alberto Lattuada). (subtitles)
February 16, 2018. CASABLANCA (1942)- Directed by Michael Curtiz
In Casablanca in December 1941, a cynical American expatriate encounters a former
lover, with unforeseen complications. Stars Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman.

April 27, 2018. HAMLET (1948)- Directed by Laurence Olivier
Prince Hamlet struggles over whether or not he should kill his uncle, whom he suspects
has murdered his father, the former king.

THE ANNUAL 24-HOUR PLAYs FESTIVAL

Performance of the plays - Saturday, September 9 at 7:30 p.m.
The 24 Hour Plays is collaborative event that takes place in a 1 day-period. Multiple
groups work toward a common goal - creating a short, devised play to present. Every group member has the choice of being a playwright,
director, or actor. You can even choose to do all three! There is also a technical
side to the event, like any theatre production. So you can work there if you like. Each
group will be given a random mix of props, a line, and a genre.
Must be 18 years or older to participate.
