Pregnant Workers Fairness Act (PWFA) Update

There have been recent changes in federal regulations regarding pregnancy and maternity leaves. The University of Toledo, in accordance with the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act (PWFA), provides reasonable workplace accommodations and leaves to qualified workers with known limitations related to pregnancy, childbirth, or related medical conditions, unless the accommodation will cause the employer an undue hardship. For more information on PWFA accommodations please visit our webpage HR Compliance.

If the pregnant worker will need full-time leave, there are one of two options available:

  1. If within the first year of employment, apply for non-FMLA maternity leave in your myUT portal under ‘Other HR Information> Application for Non-FMLA Leave’.
  2. If eligible for FMLA, apply with FMLA Source. PWFA runs concurrent with FMLA if applicable and would not cause changes to the current process for FMLA-eligible employees. Those who already applied with FMLA Source do not have to re-apply. More information and application instructions to request leave can be found on UT Leave of Absences webpage. For more information on the PWFA and reasonable accommodations related to pregnancy information is here.
