Graduate Admission Requirements

The College of Graduate Studies has established minimum requirements for admission to UToledo. Individual graduate programs may have additional standards by which they evaluate graduate applicants.

International Students – Additional Requirements

  • Passport. All international students must submit a copy of their passport.
  • Proof of Financial Resources
  • Translations
    • UToledo does not provide translation services. You need to provide clear and legible photocopies of word-for-word English translations of all foreign language documents.
    • Approved transcript translation services can be found at the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services.
  • Proof of English Language Proficiency
    • You will need minimum English Proficiency Scores (see list below). Check with your program contact to see if your program requires English proficiency scores that may be higher. The University of Toledo institution code is 1845.
      • TOEFL PBT 550 - Submit through ETS.
      • TOEFL iBT 80 - Submit through ETS.
      • IELTS 6.5 - Submit through IELTS.
      • PTE 58 - Submit through Pearson PTE.
      • Duolingo 110 - Submit through Duolingo.
    • NOTE: Test scores for TOEFL/IELTS/PTE/Duolingo cannot be older than 2 years from the first day of the term the student begins their program. In the event test scores are considered invalid and cancelled by ETS, The University of Toledo reserves the right to require submission of new test scores. Please contact the College of Graduate Studies if you have questions regarding this. 
    • The University of Toledo reserves the right to require evidence of English language proficiency for all applicants, the adequacy of which shall be at the sole discretion of The University of Toledo.
    • Students who qualify for admission to The University of Toledo but lack the required English proficiency test scores may gain conditional admission to their program of study through UToledo's Graduate Access Program (GAP). The GAP program admits students conditionally to their program of study while they complete intensive English language instruction at UToledo's American Language Institute to prepare them for graduate-level coursework.

Waiver of English Language Requirement

All international applicants must provide proof of English language proficiency. The following exceptions apply:

  • Proof of citizenship from one of these countries.
  • Successful completion of a U.S. Bachelor’s or Master’s degree.
  • Successful completion of at least 24 credit hours of academic study at a U.S. college or university.

Any request for a waiver of the English language proficiency requirement must be submitted to the Graduate Admissions Office with supporting documentation and will be reviewed for approval.
