Graduate Assistantships

Graduate assistants receive a stipend and/or tuition waiver in exchange for teaching or conducting research at UToledo.

UToledo offers a variety of graduate assistantships.

University Fellowships

Fellowships are typically merit awards with no work requirement. Fellows receive a tuition waiver and a stipend that you may use however you’d like in pursuit of your education (fees, books, living costs, etc.)

The highly competitive University Fellowship is the highest award a doctoral student can earn from the College of Graduate Studies. UToledo awards as many as two fellowships each year.

Who qualifies?

  • New full-time doctoral students with exceptional academic records
  • Must be accepted by your program
  • J.D., M.D. and Pharm.D. students are not eligible.
  • Previous recipients are not eligible.

What is included?

  • A stipend (as defined by each departmental program)
  • A tuition waiver, which covers out-of-state surcharge and all fees except student green fund, legal service and parking.
  • Renewal for up to three years for a total of four years of support provided the student maintains an outstanding academic record and makes significant progress toward the degree.

Richard L. Bostleman Memorial Scholarship

Who is eligible?

  • New full-time graduate students who have completed an undergraduate degree at UToledo
  • Must have participated for at least two years in NCAA level intercollegiate athletics at UToledo

Scholarship details

  • One scholarship available when not already awarded to a current student
  • Merit based and awarded through a competitive review process
  • Amount varies, depending on available funds
  • Renewable provided you are making satisfactory progress toward your degree
  • Financial need may be considered, so applicants should file a FAFSA.

Michigan Initiative

Who is eligible?

  • New graduate students admitted to a degree program and whose permanent address is in one of the following Michigan counties: Hillsdale, Lenawee, Macomb, Oakland, Washtenaw and Wayne (Monroe County, Michigan, residents are exempt from the out-of-state tuition surcharge and not eligible for this award.)
  • Excludes students entering Doctor of Medicine (MD), Juris Doctorate (JD), Doctor of Pharmacy, Physician Assistant, and Master of Science in Biomedical Science – Medical Sciences major.

Award details

  • Covers graduate out-of-state tuition surcharge, up to a maximum of 9 credit hours per semester.
    • Additional credit hours may be allowed if approved by your academic program and College of Graduate Studies.
    • Tuition refers to graduate-level courses only and may not be applied to undergraduate, repeated or audited courses.
  • Students must maintain a 3.0 GPA during their graduate studies to renew the award.

This award is not stackable with any other scholarship, award or graduate assistantship.

Sister Cities Special Tuition Rate

Who is eligible?

New graduate students whose permanent address is within one of the Toledo Sister Cities/Regions at the time of application:

  • Toledo, Spain
  • Londrina, Brazil
  • Qinhuangdao, China
  • Szeged, Hungary
  • Bekaa Valley, Lebanon
  • Colberg, Germany
  • Toyohashi, Japan
  • Tanga, Tanzania
  • Poznan, Poland
  • Hyderabad, Pakistan
  • Coimbatore, India
  • Nanchong, China

Details

  • Receive a special tuition rate — the same rate an Ohio resident pays plus a reduced out-of-state surcharge of $100 per semester
  • You will automatically receive the award if eligible.

 

Additional Sources Of Funding

Financial Aid

Graduate students may qualify for federal loans or government grants. Apply for financial aid by filling out a FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid).

Check with Career Services for job opportunities on campus.

Travel Funding

You can request funding from the UToledo Graduate Student Association to pay for travel to present research or attend conferences and symposia. Graduate students are automatically members of the GSA.
