Eligibility to Run for Gsa Executive Board
Planning to run for a Graduate Student Association (GSA) officer position?
Read below for eligibility information!
President
- Must be able to work 20 student worker hours per week on campus
- Must have either served on the executive board or be a current representative
- Must be a currently registered student and registered during the fall and spring semester of the academic year of term
- Must be an Active Member of the GSA (What is an Active Member?)
- Must be in good academic standing and can not be on any academic or disciplinary probation
- Faculty and staff are ineligible
- The College of Graduate Studies will accept self-nominations from interested active members who have not served as an executive board member or college representative, but whether self-nominations will move forward to election will depend on number of self-nominations from previous executive board members or college representatives.
Vice President
- Must be able to work 15 student worker hours per week on campus
- Must be a currently registered student and registered during the fall and spring semester of the academic year of term
- Must be an Active Member of the GSA (What is an Active Member?)
- Must be in good academic standing and can not be on any academic or disciplinary probation
- Faculty and staff are ineligible
- Active members meeting all other eligibility requirements will advance to elections. COGS will accept self-nominations from interested inactive members. Whether self-nominations from inactive members may advance to elections will depend on number of active member self-nominations. Inactive members must upload their resume or curriculum vitae in their self-nomination and attend an interview to be considered for elections.
Treasurer
- Must be able to work 10 student worker hours per week on campus
- Must be a currently registered student and registered during the fall and spring semester of the academic year of term
- Must be an Active Member of the GSA (What is an Active Member?)
- Must be in good academic standing and can not be on any academic or disciplinary probation
- Faculty and staff are ineligible
- Active members meeting all other eligibility requirements will advance to elections. COGS will accept self-nominations from interested inactive members. Whether self-nominations from inactive members may advance to elections will depend on number of active member self-nominations. Inactive members must upload their resume or curriculum vitae in their self-nomination and attend an interview to be considered for elections.
Secretary
- Must be able to work 5 student worker hours per week on campus
- Must be a currently registered student and registered during the fall and spring semester of the academic year of term
- Must be an Active Member of the GSA (What is an Active Member?)
- Must be in good academic standing and can not be on any academic or disciplinary probation
- Faculty and staff are ineligible

Communications Specialist
- Must be able to work 4 student worker hours per week on campus
- Must be a currently registered student and registered during the fall and spring semester of the academic year of term
- Must be an Active Member of the GSA (What is an Active Member?)
- Must be in good academic standing and can not be on any academic or disciplinary probation
- Faculty and staff are ineligible
- Active members meeting all other eligibility requirements will advance to elections. COGS will accept self-nominations from interested inactive members. Whether self-nominations from inactive members may advance to elections will depend on number of active member self-nominations.
Election information
- All eligible candidates may submit a self-nomination during the annual self-nomination period. The election period will follow the self-nomination period.
- All registered graduate students at The University of Toledo can vote in the election.
- A maximum of two officers may be from the same academic college. Officer positions are filled in the following order: President, Treasurer, Vice President, Secretary, Communications Specialist.
What is an Active Member?
An Active Member is a member of the Graduate Student Association who has the privileges of running for office, eligibility for additional research and travel funding, and more.
How can I become an Active Member?
You can attain active membership by doing any of the below:
Attend General Assembly Meetings
Attending two General Assembly meetings within six months will earn you Active Membership for the six months following meeting attendance!Attend Committee Meetings
In place of one General Assembly meeting, you can attend two GSA committee meetings to fulfill Active Membership requirements.
Volunteer for the Midwest Graduate Research Symposium
Serving as a volunteer for the MGRS will earn you active membership for the six months following the MGRS. This will not apply in advance for the 2026-2027 election.
