Practicum and Internship

All students in the MA in CEd program are required to complete a 100-hour practicum and a 600-hour internship in the appropriate setting. School counseling students will complete placements in a K-12 school under the supervision of a Licensed Professional School Counselor and CMHC students will complete placements in a clinical setting under the supervision of an independently licensed clinical counselor (LPCC-S).

Students in both concentrations must complete a series of courses and a formal evaluation with their graduate faculty advisor before they are approved for practicum and internship.

Practicum and Internship Orientation

Orientation for practicum and internship will be held in the fall and spring semesters. Students should attend orientation the semester before they plan to complete their practicum experience. For example, students who plan to complete practicum in the spring, should attend orientation in the fall. The clinical coordinator will review the application process for practicum and internship, all required forms, and provide guidance on securing a site.

Securing a Site

Students in the CEd program are allowed to select their own sites for practicum and internship. Students should apply to sites that can provide them with the professional experiences that will best prepare them for their future role as a counselor. The CEd program has a list of schools, community agencies and private practices in which the University of Toledo has affiliation agreements. Students are encouraged to explore placements at our affiliate sites, but they are also welcome to pursue other opportunities. All sites must be approved by the clinical coordinator. More information regarding practicum and internship can be found in the Practicum and Internship handbooks.
