ASHA Certification and Licensure

RECOMMENDED SEQUENCE FOR THE CERTIFICATION & LICENSURE PROCESS

This Graduate Program in SLP leads to eligibility for the Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech Language Pathology and the Ohio License for SLP, and satisfies the academic requirements for those credentials set forth by the State of Ohio. Requirements for Licensure/eligibility vary from state to state. Requirements for licensure eligibility vary from state to state. Please reference the Professional Licensure Information page for state details. For students who wish to practice in a state other than Ohio, please contact the program director/advisor Dr. Caroline Menezes or contact via phone at 419.530.4443 to discuss requirements to practice in that state. 

To attain your ASHA Certification:

  • Complete academic coursework and supervised clinical practicum for speech-language pathology as stated in the "Standards for the Certificate of Clinical Competence” of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA: www.asha.org).
  • Earn your master's degree.
  • Complete the application for membership and certification in black ink. Obtain the signature of your graduate program director in the appropriate areas. The program director's signature will verify that you have met coursework and practicum requirements for certification.
  • Submit the application to the ASHA National Office along with the required dues/fees.
  • Arrange to have an official copy of your graduate transcript sent to the Certification Administration Section of the ASHA National Office. The transcript must indicate the graduate degree and the date it was awarded.
  • Register for the Praxis examination in audiology or speech-language pathology and list ASHA as well as the University of Toledo as score recipients. Only scores received directly from ETS will be accepted for certification. Note: You must achieve a passing score (600 or higher) on this exam.
  • Begin the Clinical Fellowship (CF) experience under the supervision of an ASHA certified supervisor. Prior to beginning the CF, verify your supervisor's current ASHA certification status by contacting the ASHA Action Center. Your supervisor must maintain his or her certification status throughout the CF in order for all of the experience
    to be accepted.
  • As you begin the CF, review with your supervisor the CF requirements and skills on which you will be evaluated during the CF experience.
  • Contact your state licensing agency to determine their requirements for persons completing the clinical fellowship experience.
  • At the completion of the CF experience, submit the required Clinical Fellowship Report and Rating form signed by both you and your CF supervisor.

To attain your Ohio License in Speech-Language Pathology:

Complete forms verifying practicum experiences; have forms verified by Program Director.
The Department may verify your graduation to the Licensure Board by letter.

Have sent directly to the Board:

1. Official transcript of all graduate coursework


2. Official ETS transcript of National Examination in Speech Pathology (600 or higher score is necessary)

Complete the supervised Professional Experience Plan and have signatures notarized.

Forward appropriate fees.

To attain your School Speech-Language Pathology License:

1. Take the PRAXIS examination during last semester of enrollment (PRAXIS Exam #5331: Speech-Language Pathology; ASHA Exam) as described above.

2. Complete coursework in approved School SLP program.

3. Apply for Professional Pupil Service: School Speech-Language Pathologist license via the Ohio Department of Education’s Connected Ohio Records for Educators (CORE) system. See the CORE User Manual for complete instructions

4. The electronic application will be reviewed and verified by the signing authority at UToledo, then final review will be completed by the Ohio Department of Education.

The Education Licensure Requirements

The University of Toledo 
students must meet University core requirements as well as the following:

1.Undergraduate coursework in speech-language pathology as described on the Undergraduate Plan of Study, including normal bases of speech, language
and hearing as well as disorders courses and the following requirements:

Education Requirements

  • SLP 3800 Methods for Clinical Intervention.
    Non-UT students may substitute an Introduction to Teaching class (e.g., EDP 3280)
  • SPED 2040 Perspectives in Special Education (or equivalent)
  • SPED 4110 Curriculum and Methodology for Students with Mild Needs (LD) OR SPED 4120 Teaching Students with Intensive Education Needs (Severe) (or equivalent)

  • Cultural Diversity

  • A physical science
 (e.g., physics or chemistry)
  • A natural science
(e.g., Anatomy & Physiology or biology)
  • A statistics course
  • Introductory Psychology

  • Introductory Sociology

  • Composition I and II or Organizational Report Writing
  • Technology skills

 Students may meet the requirements through one of the following options:

  • Undergraduate degree (SLP major) at UT or an accredited program at another university
  • Undergraduate with degree program (leveling courses for students who already posses a Bachelor’s degree in another field at UT meeting or from an accredited program at another university
  • Transfer of credit for similar courses from an accredited program at another university
  • Demonstration of Technology skills
