2024 Speakers
Bryan Bonner – Regulatory Counsel, CLEAR
Bryan A. Bonner served as the Deputy Chief Counsel for Field Operations for the Department
of Homeland Security, Transportation Security Administration (TSA), and Chief Counsel’s
Office. Bryan also served as an Investigative Counsel with the United States House
of Representatives Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the U.S.
Capitol. During his career, Bryan also served on detail to the Office of the Director
of National Intelligence (ODNI).
Currently, Bryan serves as Regulatory Counsel at CLEAR, where he leverages his 30 years of legal and consulting experience to enhance the company's expertise and compliance in various domains, such as biometric and identity security. Bryan fosters collaboration among all CLEAR departments and leads in engaging with regulatory bodies, providing legal guidance to business, product, and technology heads on compliance protocols, and spearheading the implementation of compliant strategies for existing and upcoming legislative and regulatory changes, ensuring ongoing adherence. Prior to joining CLEAR, Bryan served as Director with the consulting firm, Guidehouse.
David Horrigan – Discovery Counsel and Legal Education Director, Relativity
David Horrigan is Relativity’s discovery counsel and legal education director, where
he leads the company’s legal education program. A former reporter and assistant editor
at The National Law Journal, David’s articles have appeared also in The American Lawyer,
Corporate Counsel, The New York Law Journal, Texas Lawyer, The Washington Examiner,
and others, and he has been quoted by The Wall Street Journal, American Public Media’s
Marketplace, TechRepublic, and publications of the law schools of Yale, Northwestern,
Emory, and others.
Carrie A. Johnson – Partner, Eastman & Smith
For nearly 20 years Carrie has helped clients protect and defend their most important
assets and brands. Her practice concentrates in the areas of trademark, unfair competition,
advertising and copyright law, with an emphasis on international and domestic brand
management. Ms. Johnson also has extensive experience in trademark and copyright enforcement
via arbitration, federal courts and proceedings before the Trademark Trial and Appeal
Board, as well as negotiating and arbitrating domain name disputes under the Uniform
Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy.
Hon. Justice Tanya R. Kennedy, NY
Hon. Tanya R. Kennedy, an Associate Justice of the Appellate Division, First Department,
was appointed to the court in July 2020. Her 18-year career as a jurist began in January
2006, serving in Criminal Court, Civil Court (including Supervising Judge in New York
County), Family Court, and Supreme Court. Justice Kennedy’s unwavering dedication
to legal education is evidenced by her former role as an adjunct professor at Fordham
University School of Law, where she taught a juvenile justice seminar for ten years
and will return there this fall to teach a seminar course #LawyeringUp: Skills for
Success in the Legal Profession – Beyond The Books.
Hon. Judge James R. Knepp II, OH
Hon. James R. Knepp II is a District Judge for the Northern District of Ohio, sitting
in Toledo. He previously served as Magistrate Judge in the same court for over ten
years. He spent his career in private practice in Toledo as a civil litigator following
a clerkship with District Judge John W. Potter (ND Ohio). Judge Knepp is chair of
the Northern District of Ohio IT committee and was appointed last year as the district
judge representative on the Case Management Modernization Board, the body overseeing
the development and implementation of the replacement for the current CM/ECF systems
in all federal district, appellate and bankruptcy courts in the nation.
Corey Lee – Partner, Jones Day
Corey Lee is a strategic legal advisor for clients involved in litigation and government
investigations and a national thought leader in e-discovery best practices and policy.
Corey has represented clients in litigation arising from information security and
data breach incidents, contract disputes, class actions, business torts, securities,
and product liability. He has conducted internal investigations for health care, consumer,
and retail companies and has obtained successful resolutions in courts and through
settlement.
Dean Agnieszka McPeak – Gonzaga University School of Law
Agnieszka McPeak is an Associate Professor of Law and the Associate Dean for Academic
Affairs and Program Innovation. Dean McPeak’s research and writing focus on the intersection
of law and technology, particularly as it relates to social media, ethics, privacy,
and the innovation and sharing economies. Dean McPeak’s scholarship has been published
in Wisconsin Law Review, Wake Forest Law Review, Connecticut Law Review, and Arizona
State Law Journal, among others. Additionally, her work has been cited in several
legal opinions, including a recent decision by the highest court of New York redefining
the scope of civil discovery of social media content.
James Nusbaum – CEO, Barry Bagels
Jim Nusbaum is a 1995 graduate of The University of Toledo College of Law and a 1992
graduate of Indiana University. Jim is currently the Chief Executive Officer of Barry
Bagels Franchise Holdings. Barry Bagels currently has 51 locations either open or
under development. Prior to his current professional position, he was the General
Counsel and Chief Administrative Officer of Corner Dental. From 1998-2009, Jim was
engaged in the private practice of law in Toledo, Ohio.
Matthew Spaulding – General Counsel, DEWESoft
Matthew is currently serving as General Counsel for DEWESoft, a global data acquisition
company. Matthew is a former member of Shumaker, Loop and Kendrick, LLPs Corporate
and Intellectual Property and Technology Service Lines. Matthew’s practice concentrated
on representing public and private companies on corporate and technology-related matters.
Matthew regularly advised clients in the technology, manufacturing, automotive, and
professional services industries. Matthew’s practice included an emphasis on privacy
compliance, commercial transactions, distributor and supply arrangements, business
acquisitions, and corporate governance.
Benjamin Syroka – Career Law Clerk, Hon. Jack Zouhary
Benjamin R. Syroka graduated from Toledo Law in 2019, where he served as Editor-in-Chief
of the Toledo Law Review. He now works as Career Law Clerk to the Honorable Jack Zouhary
in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Ohio. Ben’s work has been
published in various local and nationwide periodicals, including articles on prisoner
rights, recidivism, speedy-trial rights, unfair labor practices, consumer protection,
judicial diversity, pro se representation, and artificial intelligence. Ben also holds
various leadership positions with the Toledo Bar Association, Northern District of
Ohio, and Federal Bar Association.
Nicholas Wittenberg – Corporate Counsel and Senior Advisor for Legal Technology and
Innovation, Armedia
Nicholas Wittenberg is an attorney specializing in legal technology policy, serving
as Corporate Counsel and Senior Advisor for Legal Technology and Innovation at Armedia.
His previous positions include Senior Legal Counsel at the White House Office of Science
and Technology Policy, where he worked on various initiatives related to artificial
intelligence, cybersecurity, data privacy, intellectual property, quantum computing,
and innovation, all with significant implications for the nation and the legal sector.
