Business law expert to join College of Law faculty

June 5, 2013

The University of Toledo College of Law will welcome Eric C. Chaffee, previously a professor of law at the University of Dayton School of Law, to the faculty this fall. At Toledo Law, Professor Chaffee will teach Contracts, Business Associations, and other advanced courses in the business law area.

“We’re all tickled that Eric Chaffee will be joining us,” said Geoffrey Rapp, the Harold A. Anderson Professor of Law and Values and chair of the faculty appointments committee. “He is an outstanding scholar, but most importantly, all evidence indicates he is one of the best teachers of business law in the state.”

Professor Chaffee earned numerous accolades for his teaching while at the University of Dayton. He won four Professor of the Year Awards voted upon by students – three for upper-level teaching (2012, 2011, and 2010), and one for first-year teaching (2012). He also received the Dean Francis J. Conte Special Service Award in 2012.

His scholarship has attracted national attention. He is the co-author of the forthcoming book “Global Perspectives on International Securities Regulation,” as well as articles in the Ohio State Law Journal, Washington and Lee Law Review, and American University Law Review, among other publications.

Professor Chaffee served as chair of the Project for Law and Business Ethics at the University of Dayton and as director of faculty research. He has co-organized the National Business Law Scholars Conference for the past three years. At Toledo Law, Chaffee will coordinate the College’s annual co-sponsorship of the Ohio Securities Conference with the Ohio Division of Securities.

Chaffee has taught at Case Western Reserve University School of Law and in Prague as part of a DePaul University-sponsored study abroad program. Before he started teaching, Chaffee spent four years practicing business law at Jones Day. He earned his law degree from the University of Pennsylvania Law School and graduated summa cum laude from The Ohio State University.

Professor Chaffee adds to one of Toledo Law’s emerging strengths – its tremendous business law faculty. In addition to Professor Chaffee, the College’s business law professors include Professor Rapp, Assistant Professor Kara Bruce, Associate Professor Benjamin Davis, and Assistant Professor Gregory Gilchrist.

Professor Chaffee joins the College of Law as a full professor with tenure.
