Toledo Law Graduating Students Selected for Membership in the Order of the Coif

July 3, 2017

Eight members of the 2017 Toledo Law graduating class were recently selected for membership in the Order of the Coif, a renowned legal honor society founded in 1912.  Toledo Law is one of 86 law schools in the country and one of four in Ohio with a chapter of the Order of the Coif.  It was granted a chapter in 1984.

The Order of the Coif describes itself as “an honorary scholastic society, the purpose of which is to encourage excellence in legal education by fostering a spirit of careful study, recognizing those who as law students attained a high grade of scholarship, and honoring those who as lawyers, judges and teachers attained high distinction for their scholarly or professional accomplishments.”

For law school graduates to be selected for membership, they must be ranked in the top 10% of their graduating class.  This year’s new members include:

  • Kaitlyn Filzer;
  • Rachel Hammersmith;
  • Nicholas Huckaby;
  • Nicholas Jacoby;
  • Emily Morrison;
  • Lauren Smith;
  • Steven Steel; and
  • Andrea Young.

”These are wonderful graduates who have distinguished themselves academically but also in regard to their character and contributions to the law school,” said Associate Dean for Academic Affairs Geoffrey Rapp, who serves as President of the College’s chapter of the Order of the Coif.  “We were lucky to have them as our students and await the great things they and their classmates will achieve.”
