Toledo Law Named a Top 10 Best School for Public Service

by Diana Case | Feb. 9, 2018

The University of Toledo College of Law was ranked No. 9 nationally (No. 2 regionally) in preLaw magazine’s list of the top law schools for Public Defenders and Prosecutors. In identifying top schools, the magazine reviewed job placement data (50 percent), curricula (40 percent), and debt and loan repayment options (10 percent).

Toledo Law has a strong tradition of preparing attorneys for practice in criminal law. We offer hands-on, practical experience through clinical and externship opportunities where students work closely under the guidance of supervising attorneys or judges. In field placements, students work directly with local prosecutors and public defenders—conducting real-life interviews, plea negotiations, and providing support in trials. Three years ago, Toledo Law launched its Criminal Post-Conviction Remedies Clinic, through which students work under the supervision of a practicing criminal defense attorney to represent convicted persons in appeals and other requests for relief.

We also offer additional opportunities for students to specialize with the Certificate of Concentration in Criminal Law and a Juris Doctor/Master of Arts in Criminal Justice joint degree program.

“The University of Toledo College of Law equips students with the foundation and practical skills needed to launch their criminal law careers,” said Jelani Exum, professor of law and associate dean for diversity and inclusion. “We go beyond the typical first year criminal law class and offer students exciting hands-on work opportunities through our clinical and externship programs. In our upper level criminal classes, students can study a variety of topics—from adjudications, to juvenile law, to sentencing. All of these opportunities make our school a great place to start a criminal law career.”
