Toledo Law Launches Professional Development Program

by Diana Case | July 1, 2020

The Office of Professional Development launched a Professional Development Program (PDP) for incoming students in fall 2019 and just wrapped up the first year. The PDP enables Toledo Law students to build foundations in professional identity and professional development while advancing their career goals and service to the community. Students were required to complete a checklist of professional development activities, such as converting a standard resume into a legal resume, attending networking events, completing pro bono work, and exploring the profession via connecting with attorneys.

Students are encouraged to complete the required activities in a way that helps them grow into the profession. Some students chose to learn about business and networking etiquette, others attended the Night at the Toledo Symphony event and reception, or participate in the yearly Government and Public Interest Forum as options for completing their networking activities.

Students also found pro bono opportunities through local bar association clinics, volunteered with an attorney on a pro bono case, or worked more than 30 hours unpaid at a nonprofit or government entity. They explored the profession by attending committee meetings with a local or national bar association, had an informational interview with an attorney in a desired practice area, or observed various court proceedings.

Students continued to complete activities after moving to a remote learning environment due to the pandemic. Many students enjoyed watching the Ohio Supreme Court’s stream of oral arguments or learned from prior lectures held at the College of Law.

Overall, 97% of the entering first-year students completed all required PDP activities. The Office of Professional Development looks forward to continuing the program for the 2020-21 academic year.
