Launch into Law Diversity Pipeline Program Continues to Thrive

Toledo Law hosted its third cohort of participants over the summer as part of the college's Launch into Law diversity pipeline program. The weeklong, immersive experience continues to thrive as it builds a pathway for historically underrepresented students to earn their J.D. This year's final cohort included first-generation college students and working professionals in nursing, healthcare, finance, and law enforcement.
The Launch into Law schedule shifted this year due to the pandemic. As a result, the application deadline was extended, with program dates moved to the law school's summer session. The selection process was highly competitive, with applicants from across the country.
Launch into Law highlights the tremendous breadth of career options available to those with a J.D. degree. Participants complete coursework to prepare for the Law School Admission Test (LSAT) and improve their legal writing and study skills. Additionally, they attend a first-year class and engage in sessions with law school deans, professors, and guest speakers on success strategies, experiential learning and legal career opportunities.
Mentoring plays a significant role in the program. Each participant is matched with two distinct mentors — a current law student and a legal professional, who support participants throughout their educational journey.
As evidenced in previous years, program outcomes include a rise in LSAT practice test scores administered pre- and post-experience. This year, scores increased an average of seven points, with increases as high as 16 points.
"The Launch into Law program has become tremendously successful and an essential part of the college's plan to increase diversity and inclusion," said Rob Salem, associate dean for diversity and inclusion and clinical professor of law at Toledo Law. "Students in the program are overwhelmingly happy with their decision to participate and feel much more prepared for law school. Our goal now is to grow the program so we can accommodate more students and further diversify our student body."
Launch into Law continues to make strides while contributing to the college's diversity and inclusion goals. Since launching the program in 2019, 16 Launch-into-Law alumni have been admitted to the College of Law.
Applications are currently being accepted for the next program year, which takes place Jan. 10-14, 2022. Those who complete the program and later apply to Toledo Law are eligible for a $1,000 scholarship upon acceptance.
