Law Review Board 53

The University of Toledo Law Review has announced its elected 2021-22 student editorial board. The Toledo Law Review is a student-edited journal founded in 1968 that publishes articles of legal interest submitted by scholars, practicing attorneys, members of the judiciary, and students. The journal is published three times a year.

Michelle Kovach will serve as the editor-in-chief of Board 53. Kovach is a second-year law student from the Ann Arbor, Michigan area. She holds a bachelor's degree in international studies with a focus on political science and French languages from the University of Michigan-Dearborn. Upon graduation, she moved to Florence, Italy, to teach English as a Foreign Language.

Kovach continued teaching after returning to her hometown. She taught high school English and mathematics while helping students get into college or trade school and find jobs. Passionate about environmental protection and the intersectionality of women's rights and underserved communities, she chose to attend law school to advance social equity.

Kovach is currently a law clerk for the Environmental Protection Agency within the Office of Pesticides Programs, where she assists with Freedom of Information Act requests and eDiscovery. She is actively engaged in several student organizations at the law school, including the Environmental Law Society, Mock Trial Team, National Lawyers Guild, OUTLaw, and Public Interest Law Association.

"I am so fortunate to be surrounded by intelligent, driven people who strive for greatness every day in law school," said Kovach. "I have big shoes to fill but am proud to have been one of those chosen to continue molding the College of Law's Law Review into an acclaimed publication in the legal field."

Executive committee members include Marcus Reed as executive articles editor, Jesse Scott as managing editor, Lauren Schaffer as technical editor, and Kathryn Young as symposium editor.

The rest of the editorial board consists of executive editors, articles editors, note & comment editors, and contributing editors.

Executive editors perform full, substantive edits of each article in the publication and include Ameena Alauddin, Jorden Messmer, Dayne Rogers, Dan Roy, and Gabriela Santos Toscano.

Article editors focus on proper footnote format and include Brianna Becraft, Erin Knueve, Sami Moses, Brigitte Schultz, and Tyler Wittenmyer.

Aaron Hill, Tre Hogue, Nathan Johnson, Maria McCabe, Abagale McCurdy, and Maddison Moser are the note & comment editors. They mentor new members during the note-writing process.

Contributing editors are Adam Coontz, Molly Galvin, Sarah Hilby, Cecily Stewart, and Maria Zirbel. Their responsibilities include ensuring proper citation use and maintaining source material for the citations.

Contributing symposium editors are Jack Diedrick and Paige Ortner. They assist in the planning and execution of the annual Law Review Symposium, which attracts notable speakers and panelists.

"Serving as a law review editor is the pinnacle of the law student experience," said Professor Greg Gilchrist, faculty advisor for Law Review. "It's an honor, no doubt. But it's also a significant responsibility. These students will manage an ongoing scholarly enterprise as others have done for more than a half-century. As this new board guides the law review through another successful year, they will be called upon for their writing, analytic, editorial, management, and interpersonal skills. They'll also be developing these core skills in ways that benefit their future clients. I am confident that they will make the College of Law and the Law Review alumni proud."
