Law Review Board 54

The University of Toledo Law Review has announced its elected 2022-23 student editorial board. The Toledo Law Review is a student-edited journal founded in 1968 that publishes articles of legal interest submitted by scholars, practicing attorneys, members of the judiciary and students. The journal is published three times a year.

Law Review members are selected through a highly-competitive and in-depth interview process. The elections committee, made up of members from the previous board, considers academic performance, writing ability as demonstrated by their academic writing and editing throughout the year and leadership potential.

Gabrielle Guliana was selected by the elections committee to serve as the editor-in-chief of Board 54. Guliana is from metro Detroit and will be a third-year law student this fall. She is a first-generation law student. Her family is Chaldean and her parents immigrated to the U.S. from Iraq. Her culture and roots are an important part of her life.

In 2019, Guliana graduated from Central Michigan University with a bachelor's degree in political science and a minor in philosophy and legal studies. While earning her bachelor’s degree, Guliana studied abroad in The Hague, Netherlands, where she learned international law at the International Court of Justice and International Criminal Court. After graduating with her B.S., Guliana worked at a law firm for a year where she was able to learn about and engage in the inner workings of the legal field, including administrative tasks and maintaining relationships with clients. Working there assured her that she had chosen the right path.

Since joining Toledo Law in 2020, Guliana has served as the Student Bar Association (SBA) Representative for the Arab American Law Student Association and is a Women’s Law Student Association member. She served as class representative for the SBA as a 2L and was part of the Social Committee. She has been a teaching assistant for torts and constitutional law. She has been elected vice president of the Middle Eastern and North African Law Student Association (formerly the Arab American Law Student Association.)

“I have big shoes to fill as Editor-in-Chief of Board 54,” Guliana says. “I’m looking forward to working with my incredibly talented peers to produce an insightful journal with hopes that it will influence the legal community at large.”

Executive committee members include Garner Dusa as executive articles editor, Michael Walton as managing editor, Claire Griffin as technical editor, and Camerin Sharak as symposium editor.

The rest of the editorial board consists of executive editors, articles editors, note & comment editors, and contributing editors.

Executive editors perform full, substantive edits of each article in the publication and include Jordan Ghesquiere, Rebecca Marcus-Nicholls, Thomas Rockhill and Jacob Sadilek.

Article editors focus on proper footnote format and include Nicholas Ensinger, Robyn Francillon, Rachel Hovenden, Hope Luther and Chase Solys.

Jenna Delarber, Ziena Hatem, Sarah Knepp and Alyson Waite are the note & comment editors. They mentor new members during the note-writing process.

Contributing editors are Ahmed Atari, Joseph Singer and Hussien Kazwini. Their responsibilities include ensuring proper citation use and maintaining source material for the citations.

Contributing symposium editors are Madison Knapp and Patrick Pickering. They assist in the planning and execution of the annual Law Review Symposium, which attracts notable speakers and panelists.

“The law review is an integral part of the College of Law. As an organization, it provides a connection to the history and future of the institution and gives its members an opportunity to grow as writers, editors, and leaders,” says Professor Jessica Knouse, faculty advisor to Board 54. “As a publication, it provides a platform for thoughtful discourse and scholarly engagement. I'm thrilled to take on this new role as faculty advisor. Board 54 is a wonderful group of students, and I look forward to being part of their journey.”
