December 20, 2013: Qiming Duan successfully defends his dissertation

Congratulations to Qiming Duan  who successfully defended his dissertation December 20. The title of his dissertation was Cardiac Na/K-ATPase in Ischemia-Reperfusion Injury and Cardioprotection and his major advisor was Dr. Sandrine Pierre.

 

November 1, 2013: Jian Wu successfully defends his dissertation

Congratulations to Jian Wu who successfully defended his dissertation November 1. The title of his dissertation was Role of Phosphoinositide 3-Kinase α (PI3Kα) in Ouabain-induced Cardiac Signaling and Hypertrophy and his major advisor was Dr. Lijun Liu.

 

August 28, 2013: Varunkumar Pandey successfully defends his dissertation

Congratulations to Varunkumar Pandey who successfully defended his dissertation August 28. The title of his dissertation was The Effect of Glucocorticoids on Regulation of the Human Angiotensinogen Gene and the Blood Pressure and his major advisor was Dr. Ashok Kumar.

 

August 19, 2013: Welcome new BMS Graduate Students

The third annual Lab Coat Ceremony was held at 3:00PM to welcome the new graduate students into the BMS program.  The students were welcomed by Dr. Patricia Komuniecki, Vice Provost Graduate Affairs, Dean College of Graduate Studies and Dr. Kandace Williams, Associate Dean, COM Graduate Programs and Mr. Dan Saevig, Associate Vice President for Alumni Relations.  Each graduate student was presented a lab coat Mr. Daniel Saevig, assisted by Marianne Pohlman.  Following the ceremony the students were addressed by Dr. Dorothea Sawicki, Associate Dean College of Graduate Studies & Vice Chancellor for Graduate Health Science Studies and Stuart Collins, president of the Council of Biomedical Graduate Students

June 13, 2013: Sumit Monu successfully defends his dissertation

Congratulations to Sumit Monu who successfully defended his dissertation June 13. The title of his dissertation was Heme Oxygenase System in Myocardial Infarction and Post Ischemic Renal Dysfunction and his major advisor was Dr. Nader Abraham.

 

JUNE 7, 2013: THE 40TH ANNUAL PHARMACOLOGY COLLOQUIUM AT WAYNE STATE UNIVERSITY

The 40th Annual Pharmacology Research Colloquium was hosted this year by Wayne State University Dept. of Pharmacology. This Pharmacology Colloquium brings together graduate students and faculty from the "pharmacology" departments of the Michigan State University, the University of Michigan, Wayne State University, and the University of Toledo, College of Medicine for a day long scientific program. 
The program included 13 oral presentations, including those by UT students Resmi Pillai, Gaurav Mehta, Qiming Duan and Jian Wu, 40 poster presentations including 7 presented by UT students. The keynote lecture was presented by John S. Lazo, Ph.D. current president of ASPET and Associate Dean for Basic Research at the University of Virginia.

 June 11, 2013: Xiaoliang Qiu successfully defends his dissertation

Congratulations to Xiaoliang Qiu who successfully defended his dissertation June 11. The title of his dissertation was Kiss1 Neurons and Metabolic Sensing and his major advisor was Dr. Jennifer Hill.

 

June 4, 2013: Lance Stechschulte successfully defends his dissertation

Congratulations to Lance Stechschulte who successfully defended his dissertation June 4. The title of his dissertation was The Co-chaperones FKBP51 and PP5 Control Nuclear Receptor Phosphorylation and Adipogenesis and his major advisors were Drs. Ed Sanchez and Sonia Najjar.

 

March 19-20, 2013: Annual Biomedical Graduate Research Forum

The Annual Biomedical Science Graduate Research Forum was held on March 19-20, 2013.  This event is organized by the Council of Biomedical Graduate Students of the UT Health Science Campus and provides an opportunity for health science students to present their work to fellow students and faculty.  This year both oral and poster presentations were included with 16 oral presentations and 36 posters.  Three CVMD students, Varunkumar Pandey, Resmi Pillai and Jian Wu gave oral presentations and nine students in the CVMD track presented posters.  Winners in the poster competition were first place Minal Mulye (IIT track, Mark Wooten, PhD advisor), second place David Leggat (IIT track, Dr. Julie Westerink advisor) and third place Namrata Madan (CVMD track, Zijian Xie, Ph.D. advisor).  Winners of the oral sessions were first place winner Laura Halpin, (NND track, Brian Yamamoto, Ph.D. advisor) and second place Meghan Wyse (CB track, Kate Eisenmann, Ph.D. advisor).  Congratulations to all the winners and participants.  The judges of the final group were keynote speaker Dr. Robert Copeland, Executive Vice President and Chief Scientific Officer, Epizyme, Inc. and Dr. Douglas Leaman (Chairman UT Dept. of Biological Sciences).
