Scholarship Descriptions

The Arthur H. and Virginia R. Black Chemistry Merit Scholarship

This prestigious merit-based scholarship was established by Professor Arthur Black and his wife Virginia to recognize exceptional academic achievement by a Chemistry major.  Professor Black, an Analytical Chemistry, was a native of Toledo and receives his bachelor’s degree in chemistry in 1941 at UToledo. He served in the U.S. Navy in WWII, and then returned to UToledo as a faculty member in the chemistry department. He made many contributions as a professor of chemistry and an associate dean in the College of Arts and Sciences to benefit the student of UToledo.

Applicants must be Chemistry or Biochemistry Majors pursuing the B.S. degree in preparation for a career as a professional chemist and must currently be a Sophomore or Junior with a minimum G.P.A. of 3.0 overall and 3.50 in Chemistry. The amount of the award is limited to the annual income of the fund. A junior recipient may reapply for the senior year. In addition to the application form, applicants must submit a brief written personal statement stating why they feel they should receive an Arthur H. and Virginia R. Black Chemistry Merit Scholarship.

Henry R. Kreider Scholarships

The Kreider Scholarships are merit based scholarships for Chemistry majors honoring Dr. Henry R. Kreider.  As Professor of Chemistry at the University of Toledo and Chairman of the department from 1915 until his retirement in 1944, Dr. Kreider was a strong and stable influence in the growth and development of the department. His stature as a scientist and teacher was enhanced by his kindly understanding of his students. They looked upon him as counselor and guide, as well as teacher. At his urging, many of his students went on to graduate school in chemistry or to medical school and have held influential positions throughout the country.

In order to continue his influence in the encouragement of quality scholars in the field of chemistry, his three children established the Henry R. Kreider Scholarship Fund in 1955 for undergraduate majors in chemistry.  A committee was formed in the Department of Chemistry to administer the Fund and to seek additional contributions from alumni, friends, professional organizations and chemical industries in the area. Over the years these contributions have made it possible to support multiple scholarships each year from the income of the endowment. Since 1965 the Fund has been administered by the Alumni Foundation.

The award selection is based on academic scholarship.  Normally, the scholarships are awarded in the Sophomore year to take effect for the Junior year. Applications from current Junior-year Kreider scholars for Senior year scholarship renewals will also be considered as received. In addition to the application form, applicants must submit a brief written personal statement stating why they feel they should receive an Henry R. Kreider Scholarship.
