UTOLEDO ACCESS PHARMACY

The UT Access Pharmacy is located in the Comprehensive Care Center at 3333 Glendale Avenue. We are dedicated to ensuring our patients have access to their specialty medications and all other medications prescribed by your provider.  Along with coordinating and facilitating insurance approvals, we pursue alternative funding options for our underinsured and underprivileged patients.

UT Access Pharmacy provides both walk-in and appointment scheduled learning sessions at no additional cost to our patients. For patients new to an injectable medication this can be especially helpful, while others simply want to be more informed on both their disease state and medication regimen. We also offer complimentary mail order on most medications to ensure patients with disabilities or who live far away still have access to their medications.

Services

PRIOR AUTHORIZATIONS

Due to their high cost, insurance companies often require prior authorizations for what they consider specialty medications. This means they want to see clinical reasoning as to why the prescribed medication is best for your particular situation. We work with your physician to complete these requests in a timely manner. Our average turn around rate is less than 24 hours.

APPEALS

Occasionally an insurance company will deny our prior authorization request due to unmet clinical criteria. In some cases your physician will prescribe you a different medication if they feel it would be equally effective. However, in situations where the denied medication is the best option for your situation, we will appeal to the insurance company in hopes of overturning their decision. Our pharmacists and technicians work with the physician to compile studies, research, and any other pertinent information in an effort to show the insurance company why this medication is in fact necessary.

FUNDING ASSISTANCE

There are a few situations that could require alternative funding sources. On occasion, insurance companies will still deny our request after multiple appeals. Other times, we will be successful in obtaining a prior authorization but the co-pay is not affordable - often times they are hundreds to thousands of dollars. We research any and all alternative funding options that may be available. This includes grants, copay cards, foundations, and patient assistance programs.

INJECTION TRAINING

It can be intimidating to start a self-administered injection. Our pharmacists are here to make sure you feel at ease with your medication. We will sit down with you one on one for injection training. At UT Access Pharmacy we encourage our patients to come in to the pharmacy for their first dose so we can walk them through the injection process and answer any questions or concerns.

MEDICATION EDUCATION

Being put on a specialty medication to treat your condition can be both confusing and scary at times. The UT Access Pharmacy staff is available for questions and concerns either by phone or with a face to face educational session.

COMPLIMENTARY MAIL ORDER

We offer free mail delivery via USPS for medications filled at our pharmacy. You can also choose to pick them up in person from our pharmacy directly.

What can the UT Access Pharmacy do for me?

Through referrals from prescribers and office staff, a clinical pharmacist and pharmacy staff member will:

  • Meet with patients at the time of appointment to explain pharmacy services and collect pertinent insurance information should they decide to enroll in service
  • Answer questions about administration, side effects, efficacy, and any other questions patients may have about their medications
  • Perform customized benefits verification to investigate preferred regimens and first-line therapy for individual disease states
  • Initiate and complete prior authorizations when required and track the expiration of the authorizations to avoid lapses in prescription drug coverage
  • Investigate and utilize medication assistance programs and manufacturer-sponsored programs when the patient qualifies
  • Prepare and dispense specialty medications to patients, schedule prescription pick-up or delivery if desired
  • Perform first dose administration education and observation of technique if desired
  • Conduct individual disease state education sessions and patient-directed teaching on how to administer disease activity assessments in the outpatient setting
  • Conduct adherence monitoring including late to refill and primary non-adherence follow-up
  • Partner with practitioners to perform research based on adherence and disease state monitoring
  • Provide drug information services in regard to the safe use of specialty medications
