UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMS
Pre-pharmacy
The pre-pharmacy program is required for students who want to enter the five majors of the B.S. in Pharmaceutical Sciences or the Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) program at The University of Toledo.
B.S. in Pharmaceutical Sciences
The Bachelor of Science in Pharmaceutical Sciences (B.S.P.S.) degree is a four-year baccalaureate program. The pharmaceutical sciences represent the collective basic sciences that underlie pharmacy. This degree program is designed for students who wish to pursue careers related to the pharmaceutical industry, pharmaceutical science and research, pharmaceutical administration and sales, the biomedical industry, forensic science, as well as health care administration. It also prepares students to enter medical school, law school, or graduate studies.
There are five majors under the B.S.P.S. degree program:
-
-
Cosmetic Science and Formulation Design (also available as a minor)
-
Medicinal and Biological Chemistry
-
Pharmaceutics
-
Pharmacology/Toxicology
-
Pharmacy Administration
-
Pre-Med, Pharmaceutical Sciences
The B.S. in Pharmaceutical Sciences is an excellent choice for Pre-Med education. Majoring in Medicinal and Biological Chemistry or in Pharmacology/Toxicology will place you ahead of the curve in medical school and will make your medical school application unique.
B.S.P.S. Scholars
The B.S.P.S. Scholars program recognizes highly qualified direct from high school students who intend to study pharmaceutical/medical sciences and pursue graduate school or medical professions (physician, veterinarian, dentistry). B.S.P.S. Scholars participate in undergraduate research training over the summer following their freshman year (stipend provided for living expenses). Scholars are offered unique experiences to introduce them to the pharmaceutical sciences and learn leadership skills by developing relationships with industry professionals.
Professional Programs
Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.)
The six-year, entry-level Doctor of Pharmacy program prepares and qualifies graduates for state board licensure to practice pharmacy. The Pharm.D. program includes professional practice development coursework and specialized experimental rotations to prepare students for practice. Opportunities to work directly with faculty on research projects also are available.

Graduate programs
M.S. AND PH.D. IN MEDICINAL CHEMISTRY
The focus of the Medicinal Chemistry educational program is on the theory and practice of drug design, with additional advanced-level instruction in the appropriate underlying scientific areas. One of the program’s strengths is the integration of training in both chemistry and advanced biology. Biological techniques are used to identify and characterize targets, while chemical approaches design the drugs or probes to affect the targets identified. This intermingling of chemistry and biological knowledge enhances job opportunities for our graduates.

M.S. IN PHARMACEUTICAL SCIENCES
The College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences offers graduate degrees in the pharmaceutical sciences with programs in pharmacology/toxicology, industrial pharmacy and health outcomes and socioeconomic sciences.

There are three majors under the M.S.P.S. degree program:
Ph.D. in experimental therapeutics
Experimental therapeutics is the integration of basic and applied sciences focused on the study of and development of new treatments for human disease. Research in experimental therapeutics seeks to understand human diseases from the molecular level to the whole organism in order to develop rational approaches for new pharmacological treatments. In addition, experimental therapeutics includes the development of new therapies through systematic investigation at increasing levels of complexity ranging from individual molecules and proteins, to cellular and tissue based assays and to the whole organism. The purpose of the program is to train students at the doctoral level who can translate discoveries in the laboratory to therapies in a clinical setting.
