Top Reasons to Study English at UToledo

  1. Scholarships and support for English students.

Declared English majors are eligible to receive awards such as the Brand Scholarship, Shapiro Scholarship and Conrad Scholarship to support their studies. Plus, you can apply for funding to offset the cost of your professional travel to qualifying competitive academic conferences.

  2. Concentrations to specialize your degree.

Choose from two concentrations designed to strengthen your skills and prepare you for success in your next career chapter. Whether your medium is prose or poetry, screenplays or essays, as a Rocket, you’ll become a master in the art of language.

    • Literature: Gain a solid background in literary history, critical thinking and persuasive writing.
    • Creative writing: Engage in peer review and focused revision centered around three writing workshops.
  3. Unique typography lab course.

Get tactile with your text. Learn the art and process of handmade books in our typography lab, the department’s dedicated space for hand printing, type setting and paper making. The lab is also home to the student-run Aureole Press, which publishes volumes of limited-edition, fine press poetry. Working in small, collaborative teams, you’ll gain hands-on experience in every aspect of the publishing process and build connections with some of today’s most celebrated contemporary writers.

  4. Strong preparation for law school.

English is one of the top bachelor’s degrees declared by future lawyers. As a student in UToledo’s program, you’ll be challenged with the rigorous critical thinking, research and writing skills it takes to gain an advantage on the LSAT and in law school. You can also finish law school at UToledo a year earlier by becoming a pre-law student in our 3+3 program during your first semester.
