Frequently Asked Questions

What major should I pursue for a Pre-Health (MED/VET/DENT/PA/PT/OT) career path?

Students may choose any major. While any major can be pursued, there are several majors that have the Pre-Med concentration built into the program. Those majors are:

  • Biology
  • Chemistry
  • Bioengineering
  • Pharmaceutical Sciences
  • Public Health
  • Health Sciences

The prerequisites for medical school are very similar to other pre-health professions.

What courses are required for Pre-Health?

This will vary slightly depending on the pre-health path selected. The general courses that are required for all pre-health pathways are as follows:

  • 1-2 years of Biology
  • 1-2 year of Chemistry
  • 1 year of Physics
  • 1-2 semesters of Math

Courses that are not required for all paths, but are strongly encourage for all pre-health students are:

  • 2 courses in Social Sciences (Psychology, Sociology, etc.)
  • Biochemistry
  • Anatomy and Physiology

Can I use my AP or other matriculated credits for science requirements?

If you received a grade and it is transferable to The University of Toledo, then those courses can be used to meet your science requirements. For AP credit, it is strongly suggested that you take the course for a letter grade.

Can I study abroad?

Yes you can! What better way to gain some more experience! You want to be sure that whichever study abroad program you plan to do, that the courses you need will be offered that semester. Please contact the Education Abroad Office for details and opportunities available.

What if I do poorly in a required course?

If you do not pass a course that is required for your Pre-Health pathway with a "C" or better, it is strongly encouraged that you repeat the course. Consult with your Academic Advisor about how the repeated course will affect your GPA.

Are there any scholarships available?

Yes. Completing a FAFSA and having a High School or College GPA of 3.2 and above is all you need to be eligible for a donor scholarships. We also encourage you to apply for the Presidential Scholarship.
