Application Process

ACADEMIC COACHING

Mentor assisting a studentThe Rocket Launch Academic Coach Program is a core group of graduate and undergraduate students assigned to meet one-on-one with student-athletes to provide guidance in the following areas: note-taking strategies, time management skills, academic goal setting, reading comprehension and test taking tips. The goal of this program is to model time management skills and develop a comprehensive plan to assist the student-athlete in the transition from high school to college.

The Academic Coaches are assigned to work with freshmen, new transfer students and upper classman that need extra support with organizational skills or time management skills or those who are not performing well academically the previous academic semester. Student-athletes will meet weekly or biweekly with their academic coordinator for 50 minutes to discuss their academic progress, upcoming assignments, eligibility issues and academic and career planning.

CONTENT TUTORS

Mentor assisting a student Content tutors are a core group of undergraduate and graduate students assigned to meet one-on-one with student-athletes to provide guidance in specific subjects and courses. The Content tutors are assigned to work with student-athletes that need or want extra support with course content, test taking strategies for specific courses, assistance organizing course content and how to properly use course materials to help them be successful in the course.

APPLICATION INFORMATION

Content Tutors and Academic Coaches will work with student-athletes to assist them in understanding course material while promoting independent learning.

Both Content Tutors and Academic Coaches are expected to have competency (GPA 3.0+) in the subject areas in which they wish to tutor in as well as the ability to employ strategies for facilitating independent student learning The content tutors and academic coaches selected to work at the Rocket Academic Center for Student-Athletes will support the staff in the daily operations of the academic center. Additional responsibilities and other administrative duties will be assigned as needed.

All employees are expected to comply with all SASS, University of Toledo, MAC, and NCAA rules and regulations and will be required to attend ALL mandatory trainings. All Tutors and Academic Coaches will report to Nikki Golston, Learning Specialist and Tutorial Coordinator, and will be assigned to work anywhere between 5-10 hours per week, depending on our needs, the student-athlete’s schedules and each individual tutor’s schedules. Potential tutors and academic coaches must be available for at least 5-10 hours per week, evenings and Sundays included.

Rocket Academic Center Hours of Operation

Sunday - 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
Monday thru Thursday - 8:15 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.
Friday - 8:15 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Hours, Location, and Pay

All content tutoring and academic coaching appointments will take place in the Rocket Academic Center – 2nd Floor of The Athletic Complex.  Reporting and documentation that monitors student progress is also a part of the position. The salary will range between $8.50-$10.00/hr. for Undergraduate Students and $10-15/hr. for graduate/Ph.D students. All tutors and academic coaches must be current UT students.
