Studio Art Bachelor's Degree Overview

The Studio Art bachelor’s degree program at The University of Toledo is for students who want:

  • A more intense studio art experience
  • A career as a studio artist
  • A track for graduate school

Art students start out in the Visual Arts bachelor’s degree program. They may apply to the Studio Art Fine Arts program as early as spring semester freshman year.

UToledo Studio Art majors refine their art skills but also learn other valuable skills:

  • How to think creatively, research and present your ideas
  • How to ship artwork and install it in galleries
  • How to use the latest printer and digital technologies

You will leave The University of Toledo with many marketable skills that translate into real jobs.

Studio Art Bachelor's Degree Highlights

  • A well-rounded art education. Students earning a UToledo bachelor’s degree in fine arts learn the skills important in today’s evolving job market. They learn how to use their heads to critique, write, research and problem solve. They learn how to use their hands by employing tools, computers and digital technology.
  • Faculty who is personally invested in you. Studio art students benefit from faculty members who exhibit all over the world and who use their own evolving research and experiences in class.
  • Twice-a-year faculty reviews. No other art schools in the area require faculty reviews for fine arts majors. Reviews are a great way to receive constructive feedback and engage with UToledo faculty and peers. Students are encouraged to develop a portfolio of work and to develop their own artistic voice.
  • Access to the nationally recognized Toledo Museum of Art. UToledo’s Department of Art is housed in the four-story UToledo Center for the Visual Arts on the TMA’s campus. The center was designed by Frank Gehry. Undergraduate art students have access to the Museum's resources.
  • Professional experiences. The local community offers plenty of opportunities to expand your portfolio. Art majors have:
    • Created wearable sculptures that were presented on the runway in the Toledo Museum of Art’s Glass Pavilion
    • Pasted wood-cut murals on downtown Toledo buildings
    • Traveled with professors to classes and conferences
    • Taught art to local youth at city parks and community centers
    • Done internships at places like The Toledo Museum of Art, Bluefin Media and UT’s Department of Art.
  • Access to technology old and new. The UToledo Art Department has the latest tools, including two digital studios, dark rooms, a laser etcher, CNC router and 3D printers. It also has a foundry and wood shop for bronze casting and metal forging.
  • Create an art exhibition. Students taking classes in New Media Design Practices can work with art history majors to curate a Toledo Museum of Art exhibition. Students choose artwork from the museum’s collection and design and write all supporting materials, including labels, interpretive text and marketing materials.
  • Accredited. The Department of Art in UToledo's School of Visual and Performing Arts is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design.
  • Want to teach art? UToledo offers two graduate school options.
    • The Art Education graduate degree program offered in partnership with the Judith Herb College of Education
    • UToledo’s Licensure & Alternative Master's Program (LAMP). If you already have a bachelor's degree in art, you can earn licensure and a master's degree in art education at the same time.
