Department of English Language and Literature

MA in English, Literature Concentration

The course of study leading to the MA in Literature provides students with freedom to pursue their own objectives. In general, it is expected that students will add to the depth and breadth of their knowledge of British, American, and Anglophone literatures and their influences; will learn how to engage in the critical conversation of research and scholarship in English literary studies; and will improve their ability to analyze, explicate, and criticize literary works.

Graduate classes are small and opportunities for multi-disciplinary and independent study are available. Our literature faculty are dedicated teachers, active researchers, theorists, and writers, with areas of expertise in British, American, and Anglophone literatures, cultural studies, feminism, sexuality and gender studies, comparative literature, theory, and creative writing. Our students come to UT to improve their professional credentials in teaching, publishing, and journalism, to better prepare themselves for PhD programs, and also for personal satisfaction and development. We have a very good record in placing our MA graduates in PhD programs; see our placement page for some of the things our alumni are doing.
