The Chemical Engineering Department possesses well equipped laboratories for undergraduate and graduate education and research.

Undergraduate Laboratories
The Department possesses equipment for a variety of chemical engineering unit operations including:

  • Batch distillation
  • Continuous distillation
  • Shell and tube and compact heat exchangers
  • Dialysis
  • Air separation
  • Packed bed gas absorption
  • Packed bed reactor
  • Continuous stirred tank reactor
Additional equipment permits measurement of pressure drops through valves, pipes, pipe connections, and packed beds; pump performance characteristics; and residence time distributions.

Graduate Laboratories
Individual faculty possess equipment specific to their research and should be contacted for details. The College of Engineering’s Center for Materials and Sensor Characterization provides access to extensive microscopy resources including:

  • FEI Quanta 3D FEG Environmental Scanning Electron Microscope and Focused Ion Beam
  • Hitachi HD-2300A Scanning Transmission Electron Microscope
  • Hitachi S-4800 UHR Scanning Electron Microscope
  • Veeco Nanoscope IIIa Multimode Scanning Probe Microscope
Other materials characterization resources include:

  • Varian Excalibur Series Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) instruments, the FTS-4000 Spectrometer and the UMA-600 Microscope
  • Gamry Instruments Reference 600 Potentiostat
  • LCPM-3000 Liquid Crystal Polarimeter from Meadowlark Optics
  • Microfluidic Particle Imaging Velocimetry (PIV) system
  • Ophir Optical Beam Profiling System

Instruments to support analyses, such as a sputter coater, ultramicrotome, and optical microscopes are also available. Other resources include: Rheometrics dynamic mechanical spectrometer, Dionex HPLC (ED/RI detectors, autosampler), Shimadzu GPC (FID/RI detectors), and Micromeritics Autosorb 3020.
