Office of Student Financial Aid

The Verification Process

After submitting your FAFSA, you may be selected for a process called verification. In verification, we compare the information you reported on your FAFSA with additional documents we ask you to provide.

You will be notified through your Rocket email and by mail if you are chosen for verification and provided next steps.

Why was I chosen for verification?

  • A certain percentage of students are chosen randomly for verification by the federal FAFSA processor.
  • You may have conflicting information on the FAFSA that needs to be cleared up.

What do I need to do?

If your application is selected for verification we will request documents from you, which may include:

We will list all verification requirements in myUT:
Go to myUT → Student tab → My Financial Aid → Check Eligibility Status

If you are a first-time undergraduate student and you receive your financial aid offer before completing verification, your aid eligibility may be reevaluated by the Office of Student Financial Aid once the verification process is finished. You will be notified via Rocket email if your aid offer changes.

Why do I need to send more information? I thought I already turned everything in.

Verification is an ongoing process. For many students it goes no further than turning in required documents and the Verification Worksheet. But sometimes we uncover inconsistencies which we need to resolve and document for your file.

It’s a good idea to check back with us after submitting your documents and Verification Worksheet to see if you will need to turn in anything else. We will send requests for additional information through your Rocket email.
