English Proficiency for Graduate School
Applicants whose native language is not English and who received their undergraduate degrees from non-English speaking institutions must demonstrate a minimum level of English proficiency to be considered for admission into a University of Toledo Graduate Program.
The University of Toledo reserves the right to require additional evidence of English language proficiency for all applicants, the adequacy of which shall be at the sole discretion of the Graduate Admissions Office.
Applicants must demonstrate proof of their English proficiency by meeting at least one of the three following conditions:
1. English Proficiency Exam
An official English language proficiency test report with at least the minimum scores listed below:
- TOEFL iBT 80
- IELTS Academic 6.5
- PTE Academic 58
- Duolingo English Test 110
- Cambridge English Score 176
Required Documentation
All scores must be submitted through the testing service company directly to the University of Toledo Graduate Admissions Office. Paper copies or uploaded digital copies are not acceptable. Test scores must still be valid (not expired) on the first day the student begins their program.
2. Educational Background
By the time of enrollment in the desired graduate program, applicant must have successfully completed a bachelor's, master's or doctoral degree with at least a 2.7 cumulative GPA on a 4.0 scale from one of the following types of institutions:
- A regionally accredited US college or university.
- A CHEA-member accredited non-US university where English is the official language of instruction.
- A university in one of the listed countries, where English is the official language of instruction at that institution.
- OR -
Successful completion of at least 24 undergraduate credit hours (or 18 graduate credit hours) with at least a 2.7 cumulative GPA on a 4.0 scale at a regionally accredited U.S. college or university.
Required Documentation
The English proficiency requirement will be updated on your application checklist
upon receipt and review of all applicable transcripts.
If your institution is not in the US, please also provide documentation regarding
the primary language of instruction.
For CHEA-member institutions, provide documentation confirming your institution's
membership.
Please note:
Graduate degrees that are strictly research-based with no academic coursework are unacceptable for proof of English language proficiency.
3. Graduate Access Program Pathway
Successful completion of the Graduate Access Program (GAP) pathway through the University of Toledo's American Language Institute (ALI).
Required Documentation
You must provide a copy of your GAP acceptance letter to proceed with the review process. Upon completion of the ALI program you must upload a copy of your ALI Completion Certificate.
