College of Graduate Studies

Graduate Application Requirements

Graduate students need to meet two sets of requirements:
  • Minimum admission requirements for the College of Graduate Studies — See below.
  • Program-specific admission requirements  — See the UToledo graduate catalog.

The graduate application fee is $45 for domestic students and $75 for international students.

  • To pursue a master’s degree or certificate, applicants will need to:
    • Hold a four-year baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited college or university
    • Have at least a 2.70 undergraduate grade point average (Please check program admission requirements for specific program GPA requirements.)
    • Submit program-specific requirements
  • To pursue a Doctoral or Education Specialist degree, applicants will need to:
    • Hold a master’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university
    • Submit program-specific requirements
  • Check with your program contact or department for additional admission requirements. Program-specific requirements may include:
    • Current resume or CV
    • Statement of purpose
    • Writing sample
    • Licensure (i.e., teacher, nurse, etc.)
    • Test scores

Beginning with the fall 2023 application cycle, the College of Graduate Studies will be eliminating the GRE/GMAT requirement for all graduate programs.

A limited number of programs may continue to require the GRE/GMAT for admissions. See individual college and program pages for specific admission requirements.

Even though it may not be required, applicants may submit GRE scores in their applications.

If test scores are required:

Depending on the program, one to three letters of recommendation are required. Refer to your program's admission criteria for the required number.

We prefer electronic submission of recommendation letters. Let your recommenders know that you will be forwarding their email addresses to UToledo. You will then submit their names, titles and email addresses on your UToledo or CAS application. We will send them the recommendation form with directions for submission.

You also may ask your recommenders to write recommendation letters and email them to graduateonlineapplication@utoledo.edu. You may upload their letters into your application as well.

  • The College of Graduate Studies requires official transcripts from all universities/colleges you are currently attending or have attended. Order transcripts (electronic or hard copy) to be sent directly from the institution to the College of Graduate Studies (or if applying through CAS, directly to CAS). Transcripts not received directly from the institution will be considered unofficial.
  • The College of Graduate Studies is temporarily accepting copies of official transcripts by email from applicants who attended an international institution only at graduateonlineapplication@utoledo.edu.
