Graduate Admission Requirements

The College of Graduate Studies has established minimum requirements for admission to UToledo. Individual graduate programs may have additional standards by which they evaluate graduate applicants.

Always verify admission requirements and application deadlines with your department or program contact.

International Students – Additional Requirements

  • Passport
  • Proof of Financial Resources
  • Translations
    • UToledo does not provide translation services. You need to provide clear and legible photocopies of word-for-word English translations of all foreign language documents.
    • Approved transcript translation services can be found at the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services. You also may use World Educational Services and order a course-by-course evaluation to be sent directly to The University of Toledo Graduate Studies office.
  • Proof of English Language Proficiency
    • You will need minimum English Proficiency Scores. Check with your program contact to see if your program requires English proficiency scores that may be higher.
      • TOEFL PBT 550 - Submit through ETS using institution code 1845.
      • TOEFL iBT 80 - Submit through ETS using institution code 1845.
      • IELTS 6.5 - Upload PDF to application.
      • PTE 58 - Submit through Pearson PTE

    • NOTE: Test scores for TOEFL/IELTS/PTE/Duolingo cannot be older than 2 years from the first day of the term the student begins their program. In the event test scores are considered invalid and cancelled by ETS, The University of Toledo reserves the right to require submission of new test scores. Please contact the College of Graduate Studies if you have questions regarding this.
    • The University of Toledo reserves the right to require evidence of English language proficiency for all applicants, the adequacy of which shall be at the sole discretion of The University of Toledo.
    • Students who qualify for admission to The University of Toledo but lack the required English proficiency test scores may gain conditional admission to their program of study through UToledo's Graduate Access Program (GAP). The GAP program admits students conditionally to their program of study while they complete intensive English language instruction at UToledo's American Language Institute to prepare them for graduate-level coursework.

Automatic Waiver of English Language Testing

International students from English language educational systems will automatically be exempted from the English Proficiency testing requirement on the graduate application.

You also may receive a waiver of English language testing if you have:

  • Received a baccalaureate or higher degree from one of these countries.
  • Recently completed three years of full-time study at a secondary institution in the U.S. We will need to review supporting academic records to see if you qualify for a waiver.
  • Received a U.S. Bachelor’s or U.S. Master’s degree or if you have completed two years of full-time academic study at an accredited post-secondary institution within the U.S. or at a U.S accredited post-secondary institution overseas.
  • Completed three years of full-time study at a U.S. accredited institution overseas and have received (or will receive) the U.S. degree.

Any request for a waiver of the English language proficiency requirement must be submitted in writing to the Graduate Admissions Office with supporting documentation.
