Financial Assistance and Resources

Available support for MPH students includes graduate assistantships and the Michigan Initiative Award. The University of Toledo Master of Public Health has a limited financial support budget available for MPH students and the application process is competitive.

GRADUATE ASSISTANTSHIPS

Students may apply for a Graduate Assistantship which provides a stipend plus waiver of tuition.  These are available on a very limited basis and the application process is competitive.  Graduate Assistants are required to enroll for a minimum of twelve credit hours each semester and work for twenty hours each week.  Assistantships are awarded for a twelve-month period, pending maintenance of a satisfactory grade point average. Students may be requested to reapply for Graduate Assistantship support after the twelve months.

MICHIGAN INIATIVE AWARD

This award is available to graduate students who are regularly admitted to a degree program (excluding EMBA, Law, Doctor of Pharmacy, M.D. program, MSBS-Medical Sciences program, and Physician Assistant  program) entering any semester from the following Michigan counties:  Hillsdale, Lenawee, Macomb, Oakland, Washtenaw and Wayne. The award is available for those courses listed on the student's current Graduate Plan of Study, which is required to be submitted to COGS after the first semester of attendance. This award is not stackable with any other scholarship, award, or GA/TA award.                        
  • Award:  Covers Graduate out-of-state tuition surcharge, up to a maximum of 9 credit hours per semester. Additional credit hours maybe allowed with academic program and College of Graduate Studies approval. Tuition refers to graduate level courses only and cannot be applied to any undergraduate courses, audited courses, or repeated courses. Students receiving the Michigan Initiative Award must maintain a 3.0 GPA during their graduate studies to continue receiving the award in future semesters.                           
  • Minimum Requirements: Available to students whose permanent address is within one of the counties in Michigan which include:  Hillsdale, Lenawee, Macomb, Oakland, Washtenaw and Wayne.                           
  • Renewal Criteria: Academically eligible students are automatically renewed for this award until completion of a graduate degree.                           
  • Please note that if you are a Monroe County, Michigan permanent resident, you are eligible for an exemption of the out of state tuition surcharge fees.  No application is required for this exemption.

PRIVATE SOURCES

The internet provides hundreds of resources for scholarships and grants. Search for web sites and enter specific criteria. Scholarships are available based on geography, race, ethnicity, country of origin, gender, area of study, professional goals, parents' university attendance, personal and parental veteran status and many, many more. A couple of hours in front of a computer can yield free tuition.


FACULTY AND STAFF TUITION ASSISTANCE

The university policy and procedure for employee tuition waivers is outlined in a link found at the employee's MyUT account. Under Employee, on the left of the screen find Benefits Information, click on Tuition Waiver. An online form is included with the information and can be submitted through the site. The form must be completed after enrolling in classes.
