Cell and Cancer Biology Track

Larry Gentry Research Forum

Welcome

The Cell and Cancer Biology Department students hosted Larry Gentry Research Forum (LG Forum). This annual event honors Dr. Larry Gentry, a former department professor who dedicated his life to medical research but lost his own to brain cancer.

Each year, Ph.D. students organize, plan, and chair these events. Students and postdoctoral fellows also deliver oral presentations on their ongoing research, covering multiple cancer types, deep mechanisms, and novel drug developments, including breast, pancreatic, prostate, lung, and head and neck cancer.

Excitingly, students vote and invite one of their successful alumni, ranked as Assistant to Full Professor in an academic university/Institute to join us and deliver a keynote speak on their current research and share their career development from the same graduate program and training. The Department also takes this event to recognize and celebrate students’ achievements. The winner of Maurice Maning Best Student of the Year, Dr. Kam and Mrs. Miranda Yeung Travel Award will be announced.

We invite you to join our annual LG Forum, a great opportunity for career development in communication, networking, organizing, and leadership.

Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology, 1986-1998

ABOUT

In January 1998, our friend and colleague, Larry E. Gentry, died at home. Larry was diagnosed with a brain tumor over eight years prior and struggled valiantly with his illness. The bravery and faith of Larry, his wife, Sue, and their daughters, Melanie and Andrea, were a genuine inspiration. Shortly after the discovery of his cancer, Larry told us that his illness was not to be a topic of discussion and that he wished to continue his research and teaching without being treated differently than anyone else. We respected his wishes and Larry continued to teach, pursue his research, to train graduate students and befriend us all in spite of having to endure surgery, experimental treatment, radiation and chemotherapy. Throughout his ordeal, Larry did not complain, and his smile was always a delight.

In addition to having this forum named after him in the fall of 1997, a few days before his death at age 43, he received the Medical College of Ohio (MCO) Graduate Dean's Award for Mentoring at a special ceremony in the Faculty Club. Although he was unable to attend, special tributes were given by Dr. Amira F. Gohara, Dean of the School of Medicine, Dr. Keith K. Schlender, Dean of the Graduate School, Dr. Frank S. McCullough, President of MCO, and others. The group attending included his physicians and nurses at MCO who tended to him for several years. After the ceremony, about 20 of his colleagues went to his home where Dr. Schlender repeated the ceremony for Larry and Sue. This pleased Larry very much.

Dr. Gentry was revered by all who were associated with him professionally, and in addition there was a continuous outpouring of affection for him campus-wide throughout his illness. We miss Larry as a kind person, who was generous with his time and ideas and who spoke ill of no one. The institution has sustained a great loss.
