Internship Course Syllabus

Course Description

An experiential course for which students acquire practical knowledge through hands-on experience in an area of pharmaceutical sciences by working in an academic, private or government laboratory or professional site.           

Course Overview

This experience is an integral component of the B.S.P.S. program within the College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences. Students are required to complete a 400-hour internship at a host institution/company in order to graduate. During the internship, students will acquire practical knowledge and hands-on experience by working at the host site within the realm of pharmaceutical sciences, life sciences, biotechnology, healthcare, and the like.

While internships will be unique for each student, common objectives will be achieved. As part of the internship experience, students will be assigned specific responsibilities by the host site that is of importance to the institution/company and consistent with the student’s major.

Student Learning Outcomes

By the end of the internship experience, students will be able to

  • Differentiate professional and unprofessional behavior within the workplace
  • Employ degree-related functions, such as operating laboratory equipment, conducting research methods, analyzing data, executing administrative tasks (i.e., planning, communications, file management, marketing/social media, office operations)
  • Recognize and describe host site terminology, issues, and trends
  • Relate coursework concepts to host site experiences

Internship Course Prerequisites

Completion of all P1 coursework within the BSPS degree program is required for internship course registration. Proof of an accepted internship offer must be shared with Joe Battelline in order to register for your respective internship course.

Grading Policy

Course grading is pass (PS) or no credit (NC). Student learning outcomes will be assessed through an employer evaluation completed at the end of the semester. This evaluation must be submitted in order for the student to receive passing credit. The final grade is also subject to the quality and completion of assignments 1 through 5.

Course Schedule

This is a field experience; there is no in-class course schedule.

Schedule of Assignments

Assignment 1: Initial Timesheet

Submit a timesheet (signed by your supervisor) that indicates you have reported to work for the first two weeks of your internship experience.  There is no required format for this assignment. 

  • Deadline: Due by the end of your second week of work
  • Submit your form here

Assignment 2: Final Report

Compose a final internship report (typed and double-spaced) containing the following components. There is no minimum or maximum length required; however, the report must address all points and be written with quality.

  • Cover page: Your Name, Internship Site, Supervisor’s Name, Start/End Date of the Internship
  • Provide a background on your employer/industry.
  • Describe your internship role and core responsibilities.
  • Describe the main objective(s) during your internship, as well as your results/accomplishments.
  • How has this internship impacted your career goals?
  • What core lessons did you learn within the workplace?
  • Summary/Conclusion
  • Deadline: Due by the last scheduled class day of the semester
  • Submit your final report here

Complete the Post-Internship Survey

  • Deadline: Due by the last scheduled class day of the semester
  • Complete the survey here

Assignment 4: Final Timesheet

Submit a timesheet (signed by your supervisor) that confirms the completion of 400 working hours

  • Deadline: Due by the last scheduled class day of the semester
  • Submit your form here

Assignment 5: Final Evaluation

The internship coordinator will notify all supervisors to complete the intern evaluation; however, it’s recommended that you remind your supervisor to complete the following evaluation.  This evaluation is needed for assessing final grades.

  • Deadline: Due by the last scheduled class day of the semester
