outstanding faculty research and scholarship awards

The University of Toledo will recognize those faculty members selected as Outstanding Researchers and Scholarly Activity at the Outstanding Faculty and Adviser Awards Ceremony.  The award will recognize the quality and contributions of faculty research, scholarship and creative activity undertaken while a faculty member at The University of Toledo. The Outstanding Research and Scholarship Award recognizes outstanding research, scholarship, and creative activity across the spectrum of disciplines on this multi-campus university. Winners receive a monetary prize as well as formal recognition at the Outstanding Faculty Awards Ceremony.

Faculty may be nominated by their peers or may submit their own file for consideration.  Full-time faculty members at The University of Toledo are eligible to receive the award for contributions made while the nominee was a full-time member of the faculty at The University of Toledo.   An individual may receive the award only once.

Submission Requirements

To the extent possible, we ask nominators to coordinate efforts to avoid redundant nominations of the same candidate. A single well-written nomination package will suffice.

(Responses to items #1 through #7 may not exceed 10 single-spaced pages, type size no smaller than 12 points.)

The criteria for selection of the Outstanding Researcher or Scholar include explanation of the following:

  1. Nature of the research, scholarship or creative activity upon which the nomination is based.
  2. Significance of the research, scholarship or creative activity and the impact it has had on the nominee's field of scholarly specialization. Explain metrics of this assessment within the nominee’s field.
  3. How the research, scholarship or creative activity was presented to the nominee's peer audience (e.g., through publications, seminars, reports, presentations, shows, recitals, patents, etc.).
  4. Pertinent awards and honors. Provide some background about the significance of this level of recognition.
  5. Pertinent research, scholarship or creative activity support received (grants, their source, amount and duration), as applicable to the nominee's area of scholarship.
  6. Duration of the research, scholarship or creative activity (at the University of Toledo and elsewhere), and co-workers who have contributed to the nominee’s achievement.

In addition, complete nomination packages should include a CV/resume and two to five EXTERNAL letters of recommendation.  There are no restrictions on who may provide these letters, but authors of these letters are expected to identify their relationship to the nominee. 

The Outstanding Research and Scholarship Selection Committee will review all materials; the vice president of research will present the committee’s recommendations to the provost for final approval.  Committee members are past winners of this award.

outstanding scholarly and creative activity awards

The University of Toledo will recognize researchers who have made outstanding contributions in scholarly or creative activity over the previous three years for their work at UToledo. A small number of researchers who have had highly acclaimed publications for their scholarly work (not undergraduate textbooks) and those who have had highly acclaimed contributions in creatvie awards, such as performances or works of art will be recognized. The scholarly work or creative activity is expected to contribute to the mission of UToledo. There must be clear evidence that the work received national and/or international recognition from the community of scholars or other recognized sources (reviews in national magazines or newspapers) appropriate to the discipline.

UToledo Librarires will work to identify publications that are highly acclaimed or published in premier journals or presses.  These could include articles in high impact journals such as Nature, Science, PNAS or others appropriate tot he specific discipline or area of study; presses including top academic presses or those that are leaders in specific areas of study; or other outlets with national or international distinction. To ensure that potential awardees are not missed, the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs invite community members to nominate those who should be considered (self-nomination or nomination of a colleague). 

This award is distinct from the Outstanding Faculty Research and Scholarly Award that recognizeds researchers for achievements only one time over the entire duration of their career at UToledo.

Submission Requirements

Nominations must include the following information:

  • name and title of the researcher
  • the nominee’s c.v.
  • the work(s) to be recognized over the 2021-23 period
  • a summary (250 words maximum) of the evidence that this work is highly regarded in the field (e.g., citations, reviews, national/international standing of the outlet; description of juried art exhibition)
  • links to journals, performance announcements, and/or reviews as appropriate for the work(s) to be recognized
  • a statement of the researcher's particular contribution in the case of multi-authored works
