Reuse at UToledo: Extending the Life of Resources

Reusing materials is crucial to reducing waste, conserving resources, and minimizing costs, aligning with the UN SDGs, particularly SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production. By encouraging reuse on campus, UToledo supports a sustainable Planet, promotes responsible behavior among the People of the community, and enhances financial Profit through reduced resource expenditure.

Surplus Center for Staff

The Surplus Property Redistribution program offers substantial savings by redistributing gently used office furnishings across departments. This initiative helps reduce waste and supports resource efficiency.

  • Available Items: Chairs, desks, file cabinets, tables, organizers, bookends, and more.
  • How to Get Involved: Staff can donate surplus items or obtain needed office furnishings, fostering a culture of reuse within the university community.

Surplus for Students

The UT Surplus/Redistribution Center primarily serves university staff and faculty. Students can still access surplus furnishings through designated programs that promote reuse and waste reduction.

  • Benefits: Students can access affordable furnishings while supporting waste minimization and extending the life of existing resources, contributing to both the People and Planet pillars of sustainability.

Give and Go Program

The Give and Go initiative allows students to donate items they no longer need, reducing campus waste while supporting local charities and communities.

  • What Can Be Donated: All items except food and toiletries are accepted, with most donations going to Goodwill or local shelters.
  • How to Participate: Students can drop off items at designated collection points during the end-of-semester donation drive.
  • Impact: By donating reusable items, students actively contribute to waste reduction, benefit local communities, and embody the People and Planet pillars of sustainability.
