INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS & WORKING ON-CAMPUS

International students are eligible to work on-campus through Student Employment while attending classes. This work can range from your field of study to learn new skills and career interests; it does not have to be directly related to your field. Working on-campus is a great way for you to explore careers, learn key competencies, and earn while you learn! All International students must maintain legal F-1 or J-1 status while working on campus.

NOTE: International students may NOT work off-campus without special permission. To learn more about the regulations, visit CISP.

Benefits of WOrking on-Campus

School Friendly Schedule:  As an on-campus student employee you are always going to be a student first.

  • Flexible schedule
  • Build skills
  • Explore campus

Transportation:  After class, you are already on campus at work.

  • Save time
  • Save money

Networking: As you get ready to graduate your on-campus network will also provide you with a great source of professional references.

  •  Work alongside your professors
  • Build a professional network

Campus Involvement:  Students who work on campus are shown to be more involved with the school.  This involvement leads to

  • higher grade point averages
  • retention rates

WHAT ARE THE RULES for INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS?

You must be a full-time student to work on campus.

  • Undergraduate Students: register for a minimum of 12 credits/semester; maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.0.
  • Graduate Students: register for a minimum of 9 credits/semester; maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0.

If you go below the minimum course load, you must complete the Reduced Course Load  through your iRocket Portal that specifies:

    • the reason for less than full-time status
    • the time frame that you will be less than full-time
    • the date of expected completion of the degree
      • If you are less than full-time, you must complete the form before the beginning of the next semester that you will be less than full-time.

Once you graduate, you are no longer eligible for on-campus employment. There are limited exceptions and these include:

    •  An approved Optional Practical Training card and employment in your field of study
    • You have changed your degree level with OISSS and have received a new SEVIS I-20
      • An example is graduating with a bachelor's degree and accepting an offer to pursue a master's degree at The University of Toledo.

According to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), employment on-campus has to be for the school or for a company that contracts with the school to serve students directly.

For example, the University of Toledo contracts with Chartwells, a food service company. International students can work for the company at school facilities, but not for the same company at any off-campus locations.

    • An F-1 student cannot work for a company contracting with the school for something other than student services
    • An F-1 student cannot work for a company that does not contract with the school, even if the work location is physically located on school property.

For example, an F-1 student cannot work for a construction company, even if the job site is on the campus.

    • However, an F-1 student may work for a contractually affiliated company such as a school bookstore, because it provides services to students.

For verification and questions about immigration regulations and positions that are eligible for international hire, visit the Center for International Studies and Programs or Office of International Student and Scholar Services.
