New graduate student welcome and orientation
Orientations change from semester to semester depending on the number of new students arriving. Most new students begin in fall semester. Please see information below to help you identify the sessions offered.
All new graduate students:
- College of Graduate Studies (COGS) online orientation is required for new graduate students. Please complete before classes begin.
All new international students:
- International Student Orientation is required for all F-1 and J-1 visa holders who have an I-20 from UToledo. More information and registration are on the website.
- Fall semester International Student Welcome Week activities are sponsored by the Office of International and Scholar Services to get new students acquainted with UToledo and the city of Toledo.
Summer and Fall 2023
The College of Engineering New Graduate Student Welcome and Orientation is scheduled for Tuesday, August 22, 2023, 12:30pm - 4:30pm in the EECS Conference Room (NI 2004). The COE Orientation is for all graduate students beginning their on-campus programs of study during the summer or fall 2023 semesters. Please join us to meet current graduate students, department chairs, graduate program directors and staff, special guests, and tour the College of Engineering complex. You will also have an opportunity to take a campus walking tour if you are new to UToledo’s campus.
On Friday, August 25, 2023 from 9:00am - 11:30am, you are invited to an informal College welcome mixer with food, games, music and fun! This is an opportunity to meet other undergraduate and graduate students, staff, and faculty. More details will be provided at the College orientation.
Additional orientation sessions and training are also required for new UToledo graduate students, depending on program of study and assigned duties. Details are below.

For students awarded graduate or teaching assistantship funding:
- New TA Orientation and Training – Training will be on September 6, 2023. You will be able to register through Invonet when the event is posted.
- International TA (ITA) speaking test – See link for information on who needs to test and to sign up. Testing dates for fall 2023 are August 18 and August 25.

SPRING/SUMMER 2024
Please consult with your program director for information on new graduate student orientation and registration for the spring and summer 2024 admit terms. New students should enroll in GNEN 5000 Graduate Launch during Spring semester in lieu of College of Engineering Orientation.
