Office of Student Financial Aid

Engineering Co-Ops and Financial Aid

If you are an engineering student who is registered for a co-op, you are considered a full-time student by the University.

  • You can choose whether to receive federal grants and federal or private loans for the semesters you’re on co-op.
  • You may not use state financial aid or UToledo merit scholarships during a co-op semester.

Fall/Spring Co-op: To use federal loans/grants or private loans

  • You must be registered for the co-op.
  • Complete an Enrollment Certification Form in myUT by the 15th day of the semester (usually the add/drop deadline).
Go to myUT → Student tab → My Financial Aid → Financial Aid Enrollment Certification Form

We will email you when the form is available to submit.

Enrollment Certification forms are generally available:
    • Fall semester: From the end of July through the end of add/drop period for fall
    • Spring semester: From the first week in December through the end of add/drop period for spring
      Find add/drop deadlines here.

Follow the same procedure for scholarships you have been awarded specifically to pay the co-op fee.

Summer Co-op: To use federal loans/grants or private loans

  • You must be registered for the co-op.
  • Complete the Summer Aid Application in myUT. This form is available from March through July.
Go to myUT → Student tab → My Financial Aid → Summer Aid Application

Follow the same procedure for scholarships you have been awarded specifically to pay the co-op fee.

If you receive merit scholarships

These funds cannot be used during your co-op semester. To make sure we shift those funds from your co-op semester to semesters when you’ll be on campus:

  • Send an email to financialaidscholarship@utoledo.edu from your Rocket email account.
  • Let us know that you’ll be on co-op for the semester and want your scholarships and grants shifted to a future semester.
  • If you wish to use your scholarships for summer enrollment, complete a summer aid application. Apps are available in myUT from March through July.
Go to myUT → Student tab → My Financial Aid → Summer Aid Application

Timeline

  • Allow three working days for your request to be processed.
  • The last day to request to use financial aid during a co-op semester is the 15th day of the term (usually at the end of the add/drop period).
  • Financial aid will not pay to your student account until the first day of the semester.

Satisfactory academic progress

Co-op classes receive grades just like any other class. You must show satisfactory academic progress to receive your financial aid.

If a co-op class is not graded during the regular grading period, you will be cited for a lack of satisfactory academic progress. Further payments of financial aid will not be made until the class is graded and you have met all other satisfactory academic progress criteria.
