Candidate Information

If you plan to attend Law Spring Commencement, please take 5 minutes to complete the RSVP form by Saturday, March 30. Regalia orders must also be completed by this date. Review the details below for additional information to help you prepare for the ceremony.

RSVP by March 30

Schedule on Sunday, May 5

  • Noon-12:15 pm: Candidates check in at registrations tables outside the Student Union Auditorium to  pick up their name cards. The name cards will be handed to the reader before crossing the stage, as it contains the phonetic spelling of your name.
  • Noon: Auditorium doors open for guests. Candidates assemble in the hallway ("T" Section) outside the Student Union Auditorium. We recommend that you leave valuables (bags, suit coats, etc.) with family or friends. Do not leave them unattended.
  • 1:00 pm: Commencement ceremony begins in the Student Union Auditorium. No tickets are required. An optional reception in the Law Center will immediately follow the ceremony.

Regalia Orders

JD degree graduates can rent regalia from the UT Barnes & Noble College Bookstore (1430 Secor Rd) in the Gateway complex. Master's degree (MLW or online graduate compliance certificate) graduates must purchase regalia from the UT Bookstore.

Orders must be placed no later than March 30. Orders received after this date may be accommodated, but will incur a late fee and the correct hood color (purple) cannot be guaranteed. All law regalia orders will include the cap, gown, hood (purple), and tassel.

To place your regalia order, contact Jay Hall, bookstore merchandise manager, at 419.530.2516 and provide her with the following information. Your height and weight measurements will be required for proper sizing.

Student Pricing (before tax):

  • Judicial doctoral (JD) degree rented regalia = $86
  • Judicial master's degree (MLW, online certificates) purchased regalia = $80.98

Order Pickup: Orders placed by the March 30 deadline can be picked up at the UT Bookstore during regular store hours approximately one week before graduation. Please call the Bookstore at 419.530.2516 before picking up your items to confirm they have arrived. The College will not be responsible for unclaimed regalia orders.

Size & Fit: Try on your regalia as soon as you receive it to verify sizing and hood color. All law hood colors will be PURPLE. If the hood color is incorrect or if any element does not fit properly, please return the items to the Bookstore ASAP to make necessary corrections before the ceremony.

JD Rental Returns: JD rented regalia (motarboard cap, gown, and hood) may be returned to the Student Bar Association (SBA) in Room 1002 of the Law Center through 3 pm on the day of the ceremony. After that time, JD graduates will be responsible for returning their rented regalia to the UT Bookstore. Rented tassels do not need to be returned, so you may want to hold onto your tassel as a memento.

JD Regalia Purchase Option: If you are interested in purchasing JD academic regalia, please call 419.530.2516 immediately for more information. Production time varies but requires approximately 6 weeks.

JD Tam Purchase Option: Tams are available for purchase for $64 plus tax to JD graduates. This is optional as you are provided with a motarboard cap with the rental regalia. Please call 419.530.2516 if you are interested in purchasing a tam.

Academic Distinction

Students may graduate with academic distinction if their OVERALL grade point average is 3.3 or higher. The OVERALL grade point average includes ALL coursework taken at all law institutions, although no student will be awarded a level of honors above that indicated by The University of Toledo cumulative GPA. These averages and the citation they merit are as follows:

3.3 - cum laude 
3.6 - magna cum laude 
3.9 - summa cum laude 

Eligible candidates will be distinguished at commencement based on all academic work completed prior to the term preceding commencement and will be notified by mail. The actual honors awarded at the time a degree is posted will be based on the final cumulative GPA.

Honor Cords

Law students graduating with academic distinction or those who currently served or have served in the military will receive honor cords to wear with their regalia. The Law Registrar's Office will email students by late April to pick up honor cords before the ceremony.

NOTICE TO GRADUATING VETERANS AND ACTIVE MEMBERS OF THE UNITED STATES ARMED FORCES: You are eligible to receive a special honor cord recognizing your military service. To receive this cord, eligible students should contact the UT Military Service Center at 419.530.1392 or by email at Verification of military service is required.

Bar exam & honors recognition information

Please remember to submit the Bar Exam & Honors Recognition form to the Law Registrar's Office by March 15. Your successes in law school are recognized in an honors booklet at graduation upon your permission. 


A diploma case will be issued only to those candidates present at the commencement ceremony. Your official diploma will be mailed to the mailing address you listed on your MyUT graduation application after you have been cleared for graduation by the Law Registrar’s Office. You will receive an email to your UT student email address once the diploma has been mailed. This clearing, posting, and ordering of diplomas are ongoing for about 45 days past commencement. To verify that your degree has been awarded, graduates should view their unofficial transcript through the MyUT Portal. Follow instructions for viewing unofficial transcripts online. If you want your diploma sent to another address or have it held for in-person pickup, please email the University Registrar’s Office at


The University photographer will take individual photos of each candidate as they cross the stage. The Flickr album link will be posted to this site as we get closer to the date.

Directory Release of Information

If your student records have been coded “Do Not Release” for directory information, your name WILL NOT be provided to local newspapers for publication. If you wish to verify or change your directory release information, you can do so by logging in to the myUT Portal

Academic & Financial Deficiencies

Clear outstanding student account balances (including library, traffic, and parking fines) before commencement. Questions regarding in-progress grades must also be addressed prior to graduation.

Computer Accounts

If you have a computer account at Computer Services, the account and all files will be deleted when you graduate and/or leave the University. If you have information stored on a computer and need to retain it for future use, it is your responsibility to call the UT IT Help Desk at or 419.530.2400 to make arrangements to retain the information or copy the files.

Degree audits & certificate of concentration

If you want to apply for a certificate of concentration, application forms for the certificates are available on the College of Law website. Applicants can run degree audits through the myUT Portal portal at any time prior to graduation to determine which requirements have been completed and are unfulfilled. If you cannot run your audit through the portal or have any questions about the information on the audit, contact the Law Registrar’s Office at 419.530.5098.
